Mistrial Declared in Atlanta Bribery Case
In Atlanta on July 2 a mistrial was ordered in the conspiracy bribery case of L. J. Pletcher and Rev. Thomas P. Hayden, former Deputy Warden and Chaplain at Atlanta Federal Prison. Atlanta July 2 The House and Senate adjourned until Monday after about 40 minutes in session. The House filed 34 new bills today bringing total introductions to 275 in eight days. The Senate added 13 bills today for a total of 54. Notably The Children's Code was introduced in the House by Mrs Napier of Bible and backed by major women's groups. similar child welfare measures appeared in the Senate.

Big surplus in treasury end of fiscal year
Washington July 2 The close of fiscal year 1925 on Tuesday showed a treasury surplus of 250605528.33 after expenditures of 5529643446.09 from ordinary recounts totaling 3780148682.42 This surplus is nearly four times the October forecast and was used to lower the public debt rather than cut taxes.

Fire destroys Leslie home in July blaze
Leslie, July 2. Mr and Mrs Virgil Duncan Bass lost their home Wednesday to a fire at 1 30 p m. The cause is unknown but may have started from an ironing board in a closet. No one was home when discovered. Mrs Bass was away in Americus. The house, about five years old and worth 4100, with furniture around 1500, was practically destroyed. Bass carried 2500 in insurance.

Two of MacMillan Party Are Exempt From All Wheel Duty
Chicago July 2 The Bowdoin and Peary ships carry the MacMillan Arctic expedition party. Two members of the Bowdoin crew are excused from wheel duty while the other 22 volunteers serve. Commander MacMillan leads Bowdoin with Eugene E McDonald Jr in charge of Peary and R E Byrd in charge of navy personnel and planes. The amphibian planes NA-1 NA-2 and NA-3 have 1200 mile range but will stay within 500 miles of Arctic bases. They carry pigeons and smoke signals and use a magnetic pole based navigation chart proposed by Secretary Wilbur to simplify observations.
