Turkish delegates at Lausanne signaled possible departure after postponement of the Near East conference. Allies proposed adjournment by week’s end, with passports issued for return to Turkey. Irad Pasha said the delegation would also depart if the Allies proceed as planned.
Turkish and Allied delegates eye a near end to the Lausanne conference with a proposed peace pact. Ismet Pasha declined to comment on adjournment plans while Allies push a binding settlement to resolve disputed points. France and Italy press for concessions and judicial guarantees as nerves run high among delegates.
Atlanta Jan. 26 First grade licenses for school teachers in Georgia will require greater qualifications. Beginning with the next issuance, applicants must be graduates of a four year high school or have four years teaching experience and pass the teachers examination. Second and third grade licenses will still be issued to those lacking these qualifications.
Atlanta officials report the influenza epidemic easing after three weeks of heavy deaths from pneumonia. Health officers expect normal conditions to return soon as the city recovers from the outbreak.
President S R Heys of the Chamber of Commerce of Americas announced Friday that membership drive committees are appointed. A meeting is set for Tuesday at 10 am at the Chamber building. Mrs S S Fort died at her Lumpkin area home on Wednesday at 12 30 PM after a brief illness from flu and pneumonia. She was born Lillian Morton daughter of T L Morton and leaves husband S S Fort and six children Amelia Sarah A T Jr Morton Sibley Ernest. She was active in the Lumpkin Methodist church. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church yesterday at 3 PM with burial in the church cemetery.
The fire department heard a radio concert Thursday night by Enloe Wallis who built his own receiving set. Stations Knoxville Louisville Pittsburg New York were clearly received. A Hawaiian selection from College Park Ga and a hand saw number from Knoxville Tenn added features. Chief W P McArthur says the firemen thoroughly enjoyed the concert.
Milledgeville January 26. The Georgia State Sanitarium will install a complete radio outfit funded by sales of rugs and baskets made in the occupation therapy department under Miss Amy Oxford. The purchase costs the state nothing and will allow concerts and entertainment in multiple buildings for thousands of patients, with profits from the sales providing the funds.
Lumpkin January 26 Citizens praise progress on Stewart county courthouse reconstruction after last April fire. The center square building will be cement floored and fireproof with batten roof, modern lighting, sanitary sewerage, and a ladies rest room. Completion and furniture installation are slated before the next April term.
Bleckley county Commissioner J P Dykes offers a 50 dollar reward for capture or information on Herbert Tilman an escaped Black male convict from the county camp. Tilman a manslaughter convict transferred from Candier county gang last year is 28, five feet eleven inches tall, 145 pounds with knife scars and a distinct gait. He left at noon with a guard rifle and overcoat. warden J B Collier oversees the camp.
Atlanta January 26 Governor Hardwick commuted John Henry Jones sentence to life imprisonment and granted respite for Roscoe Allen and Roland Matthews for further case review delaying their scheduled executions in Fulton County.
British preacher Rev. G Vale Owen arrived in New York to start a United States lecture circuit. He asserts heaven has four dimensions and says he frequently communicates with the spirits of the departed during his talks and private readings.
Bernard Baruch, wartime chairman of the War Industries Board, recommends acceptance of Henry Ford's Muskie Shoals offer if no better bid emerges, contingent on nitrogen fertilizer output of forty thousand tons annually. In a letter to Gray Silver, Baruch notes the substantial long term value to American agriculture and national security.
London reports a court decision awarding $14,000 in damages to automobile guests against the car owner after a collision. The guests, invited by the owner’s sister, were injured during the ride and prevailed in court.
Brunswick January 26 The Young Men's club will meet at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss whether the city should buy the street railway company. The issue has been under consideration by civic bodies for several months.
Six persons were injured slightly when the Southern Railway Memphis Special derailed early today at Scottsville Alabama. A locomotive and six cars left the track in an unofficial report to railway headquarters. Cause of the accident is undetermined.
Governor-elect Clifford M. Walker condemned the Kimball House lobby in Atlanta during the state agricultural conference in Athens. He urged abolishing or reforming the tax system, argued state taxes should be reduced through cities and counties, and called for service to the public over political games. More than 1,000 attendees heard the address with L. G. Hardman presiding.
Governor Thomas W. Hardwick announces personal and business reasons prevent publishing the planned state wide weekly paper. He states he will not proceed with the project as hoped.
Paris report states Germany is in default of all reparations to France and Belgium under the Versailles Treaty. France Belgium Italy vote in favor, Great Britain abstains. In Washington the Senate Foreign Relations Committee postpones action on Senator Robinsons resolution for full American membership on the reparations commission.
Macon and Bibb county leaders favor consolidating county and city government under a single head. The Bibb grand jury urged the move for economic administration. N. M. Bloc advocates uniting Bibb county with Macon, citing Virginia one-government experiments as proof. Walter Defore, county attorney, comments noted.

Atlanta January 2 William B Harrison tax clerk in the office of Comptroller General Wright stated there will be a shrinkage in the state tax digest for 1922 as compared with 1921 of probably 76 million dollars He is compiling the comparative figures for the two years and notes that while 1923 returns are ahead of 1922 at the same date the total amount turned in is expected to fall significantly.

Paris January reports say General Weygand will be appointed high commissioner of the Ruhr district after the French cabinet reconciles differences over the selection. Weygand was chosen by the premier on the recommendation of Marshal Foch, according to good authority.
In Duesseldorf last evening protests against the French occupation escalated into street violence during a two hour strike. French forces fired on rioters and a German was wounded as a Fritz Thyssen welcoming demonstration attracted crowds.
Virtually the entire railway system of the Ruhr and surrounding occupied territory was halted by a strike of railway workers. Main lines along the Rhine between Wesel and Cologne are blocked, the Paris Berlin and Warsaw Paris expresses stalled in Duesseldorf. Telegraph and telephone operators plan midnight walkout. French commander threatens jail for leaders. A mobile telegraph crew is prepared to take over in Duesseldorf.
