Reports from Europe describe Prime Minister Gladstone extremely weak and despondent amid neuralgic pains and a desire for death. Observers note his slow movements and reliance on support as he travels with a nurse and valet in France.
A fragmented ad-like excerpt extols a health cure for women claiming it frees them from pain and weakness. It asserts benefits to organs, circulation, and the ability to fulfill motherhood, praising a book by Dr. Fierce as a remedy.
A vintage advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a refreshing, gentle laxative for aches fevers and habitual constipation. It claims quick relief from a mixture of healthy substances and urges buyers to seek genuine product no substitutes and to obtain it promptly from reliable sellers.
In Washington today the House cleaned up odds and ends with unanimous consent. A bridge bill for Tallahatchie County Mississippi passed, and $15 000 was appropriated for a Sabine pass dredge boat. The Senate discussed Hawaiian annexation and silver dollar debt questions while a pension case drew attention to Mr Roberts.
The president sent nominations to the Senate including John W. Griggs of New Jersey for attorney general and Selah Morrill of Massachusetts as consul of Jerusalem. Other nominees include O West Thomas and Domingord Pappy as collectors of customs, St Clair A. Mulholland pension agent, Henry Cribb receiver of public money, Walter Botanson land office official, John Horr marshal, and John Eagan U S attorney. An earlier report noted Griggs as McKenna’s successor. A separate Irish Immigrant Society meeting urged stronger immigration restrictions and urged the president and aides to oppose passage of the immigration bill.
From Green River Wyoming a correspondent reports on President Sanford B Dole during his US visit discussing treaty ratification options, powers granted, and Hawaii’s path to a permanent republic. Dole cites economic gains and free trade implications with the United States amid mixed British and Japanese reactions.
Savannah January 22. A. & Cooper the engineer for the prosecution testified again about mattresses and harbor depths. Paul Twiggs claimed Cooper lied about him in the past and denied making a false report to Captain Carter. Inspector Hale testified to poor mattress conditions and the session grew stormy with cross examinations. Also noted Tod Sloane’s New York return and Saltram's distress voyage effects.
