Murder verdict shocks Chicago peddler case

In Chicago on January 21 Chris Merry, a peddler charged with wife murder, was found guilty by a jury after a long deliberation. James Smith, alleged accomplice, was found not guilty. The judge ordered rearrest for Smith as an accessory after the fact and summoned the grand jury. Merry showed distress as Smith celebrated.

William Bryan testifies in murder case in Jacksonville

William Jennings Bryan testified as a witness in a murder trial in Jacksonville Illinois. He described Draper as having a good reputation prior to the offense and said they worked four years in the same law office, defending Draper’s character. The defendant is said to be charged with stabbing Hastings during a real estate abstract theft. The case is under insanity defense.
