The house committee on interstate commerce reported the Hepburn Nicaraguan canal bill favorably. Debate touched delaying action until the isthmian canal commission reports. A resolution to investigate Treasury relations with New York banks and the sale of the New York Custom House was argued but laid aside by the opposition. The session adjourned at 12:20 pm.
The Birmingham Baseball association was organized here as part of an active campaign for professional ball this coming season. A meeting is planned next Tuesday for representatives from cities interested in joining the league, with correspondence ongoing with enthusiasts in Atlanta Montgomery Mobile New Orleans Memphis Nashville and Chattanooga. The prospects for forming the league are described as very bright. Morgan is expected to speak in Linden Montgomery Ala in a week to restart his campaign.
Dispatch from Springfield dated January 11 reports General Buller occupying the south bank of the Tugela at Portgieter’s drift and seizing a pontoon. The river runs high and the Boers are entrenched about four miles north. Casualties at Ladysmith on January 6 include 13 killed and 27 wounded among British officers, among them Lt Col William Henry Dick Cunningham VC.
Jan. 13 senate committees on privileges and elections opened the Clark case inquiry with a request to examine Thomas Crews Savings Bank records at Helena showing deposits of A. J. Davidson. Dentist E. L. P. Ector testified that he acted for Bickford, Clark’s manager, and letters mentioned “our friend” in Hamilton. Ector identified Wood as the indebted party and stated Bickford gave him $7,000 to pass to Wood.
Reports from Onto dated January 14 describe representatives of Ohio Indiana Michigan and parts of Illinois agreeing on long distance rates with a possible general basic rate of half a cent per mile for distances over 40 miles a minimum rate of 10 cents and a maximum of 20 cents for shorter distances. Also noted: a wreck near St Marys Bay with salvage efforts by the colonial cruiser Fiore Bagio and several political announcements including A Howard Patterson entering the race for governor backed by Senator Tillman with a dispensary plank.

He notes health is good, visits by officials, and reports of enemy sentiments about treatment, while detailing a growing POW count and basic rations.
