In Los Angeles on January 12 E A Anderson went to the home of F E Clement and demanded payment for two cases of liquor. Police say Clement died from liquor poisoning and Anderson confessed selling the liquor. He is jailed on suspicion of manslaughter.
Chinese soldiers of the first division fired on American Flavian Mullens and Arthur Benson at the Passionist mission in Supu Hunan then looted and wrecked the mission school according to reports from the American consul in Shanghai both men uninjured though Mullens was struck by a bullet through clothing
Sumter county home demonstration clubs and council execs met in the courthouse basement with Miss Bonnie Farkman. Delegates Mrs Walter Chappell and Mrs C D Brinkley joined the executive board. Two delegates were elected for Farmers week in Athens January 21 26, Mrs W H Emmet and Mrs W H Houston. Miss Parkman will be official agent. Plans for the year were discussed, and Dr J H Payne health officer urged cooperation for county health work. Next meeting set for February 2 at Miss Parkman’s office with George O Marshall county agent to discuss tomato planting and marketing plans.
Plains, Jan 12. S B Hall, a progressive Plains farmer, killed four hogs aged ten months that day. They averaged 375 pounds apiece and yielded twenty gallons of lard from the four. Fed mainly on kitchen slops, with two weeks of corn feeding before slaughter, the stock provided a nice profit for the owner.
In Montevallo Alabama 66 state convicts assaulted the Thomas Welter Company mine at Aldrich causing an estimated $30,000 in damage after a day of terror before surrendering. D A Thomas company president says a full inquiry and investigation are underway to determine the cause of the mutiny.
In Colquitt Georgia four candidates battled in a primary yesterday. W S Nowell was badly wounded by a pistol blow to the head, allegedly by deputy sheriff B B Houston. Nowell remains in critical condition today.
Norman Wimberly, a taxicab operator, was shot and killed by Harris during a so called midnight frolic at the home of Wesley Barris near Whigham. Both men leave families behind amid the fatal incident.
City council on Friday night, urged by Dr. F. Stapleton, considered changes to the milk inspection system. The plan would require all milk sellers to obtain monthly permission from the clerk and treasurer, paying 20 cents per cow each month. Monthly reports by Dr. Stapleton would be read at future meetings. Mrs. Rainey, Mrs. Melton, and Miss Nellie Laing of Dawson were shoppers in Americus.
At Friday night session the Americus city council equalized pool licenses reducing the levy from 40 to 25 dollars per table. The higher rate had been set earlier this month but was found out of proportion to fees charged others, prompting the reduction.
Major Philip Yost 53 retired United States army officer died in Canton Ohio died last night at his home. He served in the army and was well known in the local community.
Belgrade telegrams report the Fiume question settled with the annexation of Fiume Italy and Porto Barros delta to Jugoslavia. Both ports to share a common administration under the terms announced.
Five bandits entered the Brighton Park State Bank in Chicago and fired at cashier Albert Tanczar when he rang the alarm. They escaped with about $200, injuring two bystanders in the surrounding area.
January 12 report states F. J. Veal a post office employee was mortally wounded in a nighttime robbery in a residential Atlanta area. The unidentified assailant fled without taking any money from the victim.
George Matthews Jr of Fort Valley and H R Leary of Shellman were in Americus on business Saturday, dining at the Tea Room.
Sumter Bar association endorsed teaching the constitution in county schools and offered members to speak on the subject. Secretary James W. Smith notified high schools to use available lawyers for talks, with ten days notice preferred. Volunteers include Dan Chappell, Z S Childers, W W Dykes, G R Ellis, and others.
Sparta January 12 Hancock county executive committee led by chairman John C. Lewis met at the courthouse. After discussion, Wednesday March 12 was set as the date for the county primary, giving candidates two months to campaign.
W P Persons of the census bureau reports Sumter county ginned 12 229 bales for 1923 up to January 1, 1924, counting round bales as half. This compares with 22 059 bales ginned by January 1, 1923, indicating a drop of about 9 830 bales. The March 1 report will be the final local ginning tally.
Atlanta report outlines plans for William C Vereen to be urged into the gubernatorial race by a delegation of Atlanta and state businessmen. Arthur Lucas says pressure will push Vereen to enter despite prior indications. In other politics news Judge L F McClelland announces candidacy for Fulton Superior Court to replace Judge G H Howyard.
Americus city leaders moved to secure uninterrupted electric service after Thursday night’s outage. Alderman J W Hightower led the proposal, with Mayor Poole and the full council backing. City Engineer Wheatley reported that power disruption began with transmission lines between Americus and Albany, and no boilers were tested to confirm 145 pounds of steam for continuous operation. The incident prompted continued investigation and notes in a report to the council.
The body of Lloyd J. Moorehead a telegraph operator from Decatur Georgia was found on subway tracks in Brooklyn after trains had passed over it. The death was discovered today and the body is believed to be that of Moorehead.
In Atlanta on January 12 Judge Ellis declared himself disqualified from a Fulton county Superior court hearing over a temporary restraining order on tobacco sales tax. He cited his status as a Confederate Veteran and indirect impact by the tax. The hearing was reset for Monday.
Athens January 12 Following the practice of previous years the noon hour each day of Farmers Week at the state college of agriculture will be devoted to an address by a distinguished speaker on agricultural or country life topics The dates are January 21 26 The noon address will be in the main building The welcome address will be delivered Monday at the opening by Dr L G Hardman chairman of the executive committee and he will sound the keynote of the week’s work.
Forest conservationists from sixteen Southern states will converge at Savannah on January 28 for a three day Sixth Southern Forestry Congress. Delegates include lumbermen naval stores factors bankers and farmers alongside high officials and notable visitors from the North and West. The gathering aims to forge a regional prosperity built on a perpetual forest products supply.
Dr. William H. Gardner, longtime prominent physician of Dawson, has moved to West Palm Beach Florida and opened an office there. He is noted for his years of service in the local medical community.
Manila reports the gunboat Sacramento was ordered to the province of Suriage after a clash with Colorum religious fanatics left many constabulary dead. Eighty Colorum were killed on Bucas Island last week, with additional constabulary casualties noted.

Rev C T Clark of Pinehurst spoke, followed by Dr J Payne Sumter’s health official who urged club cooperation for better county health conditions.
