A large rum fleet, said to include twenty vessels, appeared off Sandy Hook as the New York naval squadron remained offshore at Ambrose Light. Observers estimated more than a thousand cases landed overnight, with three monster fleets preparing to distribute vast quantities to eager bidders from shore in small boats.
Washington authorities request an urgent briefing from New Jersey headquarters after morning papers report the large landing of smuggled liquor along the Jersey coast last night. The cargoes are said to have been disposed of as fast as offered.

Sumter county farm demonstration agent George O. Marshall says hogs and cotton are the county’s top money crops. Hog sales occur monthly year round, with five to eight cars sold for cash. buyers are mainly packing-house reps from Georgia and other states. Cooperative sales began five years ago, boosting marketable hog quality by about 75 percent. Local hog buyers have mostly left, with meat hogs sold through farmers’ sales.
