Dr Charles Barker lectured at 11 am and 3 pm in Americus High School auditorium to capacity crowds. He spoke to women and girls about a Mother's Responsibility and to men and boys on A Father's Responsibility to His Son. W W Dykes introduced him to county pupils.
Rotary's guests heard Dr Barker speak for about 40 minutes on how to succeed. He outlined three essentials: a strong arm, a clear head, and a brave heart. He urged 15 minutes of daily exercise to build a healthy body, promising a strong constitution over time.
W A Winburn, 60, president of the Central of Georgia Railway and Ocean Steamship Co, a noted Southern figure, died early today in Rochester at a hospital after arriving December 22 for treatment at the Mayo Clinic. He underwent surgery for a non malignant tumor.

Macon Jan 8 Young Stribling the noted boxer has been dropped as a student at Lanier High school. Principal Jones told him we cannot teach you any more. Superintendent Bruce declined to discuss specifics. Stribling Sr says they may move if the boy cannot finish his education locally.
The Floridan fast tourist train, operated by Illinois Central and Central of Georgia, derailed near Cresswell Alabama delaying travel for 90 minutes. No passengers or crew reported injured. The derailment occurred on the Ti n is Central line thirty miles northwest of Birmingham, with detours in place while officials investigate the cause. The train was en route from Chicago to Jacksonville when the accident happened.
Norman Red Ryan, noted bank bandit and escaped convict, captured after a street battle with Minneapolis police, was sentenced by County Judge Coats Worth in Toronto to life imprisonment. He will receive 30 lashes at 10 per month over three months.
Butler Ga Jan 8 Lewis H Beeland 88 deputy sheriff of Taylor County and son of Sheriff J B Beeland died by his own action at 4 o clock Monday in the sheriff s office in the Taylor County courthouse He shot himself on the right side of the head just above the ear with a 38 caliber pistol He was alone in the office when the deed was committed and lived a short time after being found.
Measles epidemic led to a quarantine for children under twelve in Waycross. Schools were closed and youngsters were barred from motion picture theaters and similar gatherings until the restrictions were lifted.
Miami Florida January 8 William Jennings Bryan a delegate candidate said if elected he would present the name of a Florida citizen for the Democratic presidential nomination He did not name the person but would disclose before the Democratic national executive committee meeting on January 15 this year
Mrs Lou China admitted shooting her husband Dr Archie China in Sumter South Carolina on a Sunday. The 56 year old physician banker was found dead in a bathroom with a bullet wound and no weapon located. Her statement came to a doctor in hospital where she was taken after the discovery. The confession ends speculation about self destruction.
Macon January 8 Attorney for Richard F Willingham former cotton man filed a demurrer to forgery charges in Superior Court today. Arguments on the demurrer were expected to consume all of today’s charges as the case stems from the collapse of his cotton business.
Columbus January 8. The city commission will elect a mayor for the coming year at its regular meeting this afternoon. Incumbent Mayor J Homer Dimon is expected to be re elected after two years in office. Commissioner Fuller Mynatt, former councilman, will take the oath replacing Anna Griffin the first Columbus woman commissioner who was defeated last October.
Pan-American and Transport Company says Mexican rebels captured fields at Tierra Blanca and Chapapote Nunez Wells and pipelines were shut, halting oil flow. Officials announced no oil is moving through those sites and cited disruption of operations.
Chairman Reed told the senate that John F. O'Ryan the committees general counsel altered many findings in his first report on the Veterans Bureau investigation. The committee did not agree with all findings and the full report would come later.

Miss Mamie Harrison daughter of the late General George P. Harrison was fatally burned at her Opelika home when her clothing caught fire from an open grate. A noted singer, she drew praise at the 1916 Confederate reunion in Washington with compliments from President Wilson. Her mother was Miss Fanny Drakeff, a Georgia beauty from Thomaston.
Figures compiled by Dr. J Wade Chambliss show malaria elimination work saved Americus and Sumter County a total of 17 250 dollars from a public outlay of 2 523 dollars. The effort involved six agencies including the school board with county residents contributing more than city funds.
Hog killing ran across Sumter county through Saturday and Monday leaving thousands of pounds of fire pork in smokehouses near Americus. The cold snap aided hot killing and fattened hogs ready for slaughter, with over five hundred hogs already in prime condition.
