A local store declares its aim to be the right place for quality merchandise and fair prices. The message emphasizes that customers should judge by what the price buys, not the quote alone.
Americus welcomed 1908 with a busy start as streets filled with shoppers and merchants opened the new year with optimism. Banks and post offices were closed for a holiday, delaying bill payments and freight handling, but confidence rose for a prosperous year ahead despite a national economic gloom. The city, like other Georgia towns, remains dry but poised to lead in commerce as recovery gathers pace.
John Hiley and John Marshall, both charged with murder after fatal shootings near Americus, are held in Castle Sumter awaiting grand jury action. Committed after commitment trials before Justice J. I. Hudson, they are held without bond as evidence supports murder charges. Two other killings last week saw gunmen escape.
Mr A N Walker, president of the Americas Railway & Light Co, learns of his father Nelson Walker's death in Scranton Pa at age 67. Walker will be away ten days to two weeks but construction on the electric plant and railway proceeds. He has also contracted with Columbus Showcase Co for interior furnishings of the Hotel Windsor block offices in Americus, where headquarters will be. The company plans active construction on the plant upon his return.
Prohis and antis united to bid farewell to liquor as Americus bars go bone dry after the final sale of red liquor. Crowds surged in Saloons, buying quarts and cases amid frantic bidding as old King Gambrinus fell. Tonight sees the last drink quaffed, with both sides now united.
In a few days we will take inventory and clear out every suit and overcoat possible to move. Prices matter not. dollars move the merchandise. Come at once to inspect the best line of clothing ever shown in America, available for immediate sale.
Liquor sales spiked during the Great Thirst as shops still hold several parcels of unsold stock. Saloons closed with costly furnishings risking total losses, while churches plan a week of prayer from January 6 to 10 led by Rev. LaWrenny, Rev. Bivins, Rev. Oaioe, Rev. Jody U, and Rev. Anthony. Public invited.
Friends of Hon Crawford Wheatley push him as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Denver this July. The Third District papers, including the Cordele Rambler, pledge warm support for the Sumter resident regarded as brainy and popular.
Mr James A Harris was thrown from his buggy on Cotton avenue toward the Central depot when the horse pulled short at a corner. The front wheel passed over his head, cutting it severely and requiring a physician to dress the wounds. His wife Mrs Harris was with him during the accident.
