In Nashville a joint session of the senate and house elected United States senator Hon Thomas B. Qurley, a Democrat, in a gathering of party delegates from the Memphis area. The convention named Qurley as the party nominee and probable successor.
The Democratic caucus nominated Senator Turley for the long term after a two week impasse. Governor Taylor advised his supporters to back Turley, giving Turley a 40 to 43 to 1 roll call and a unanimous caucus invitation. Nearby, McMillin and Taylor supporters argued and planned further political moves. In sports news, the Olympic club signed Peter Jackson and Jim Jeffries for a 20 round bout to be held around March 20 at Mechanics Pavilion in San Francisco.

It asserts health benefits from liver and blood support, claiming to heal digestion issues, strengthen nerves, and aid those weakened by overwork. It alleges torture leading to deaths and outrages against women and girls, urging immediate cessation, withdrawal of surrounding forces, transfer of prisoners to Assub for trial, and dismissal of several officials. The note caused a sensation among Turkish ministers.
The 1897 Mississippi floods are attributed to poor engineering work. A report cites failed attempts to drain and reclaim 3 000 square miles in the St Francis bottoms and 4 000 square miles in Yazoo bottoms. Public costs exceeded 500 000 dollars as river improvements planned by the Mississippi River Commission were misdirected.
