The House Ways and Means Committee made public a new revenue bill in the form sent to Congress by Secretary Mellon. Democrats criticized withholding detailed context of the measure as Republicans faced pressure to publish the policy.
A six story Oakland building and the Regent Theater in Lansing were practically destroyed by a blaze today. One fireman was seriously injured and the loss is estimated at 300000 dollars.
Paris reports the airship Dixmude, the largest military craft, lost since December 28, with body of Lieutenant Grenadan recovered in Sicilian waters. Dixmude held distance endurance records, preceding the Shenandoah, after a 4500 mile nonstop flight of 118 hours 41 minutes.
Griffin Dec 28 Twenty eight cotton varieties were tested at the Georgia Experiment Station. Late spring delayed planting to May 17 and some plats had poor stands so were discarded. All plats were stripped and poisoned July 12, boll weevil control held until mid August. Yields per acre ranged with Cook's 588.9, Salisbury 94.7, College No 1 887.5, Steinheimer's Cleveland 840.0, Coker's Cleveland 856.7, Fetty's Toole 828.3, Deltatype 785.0, Acala 777.5, Polnot 766.7, Meade 738.3, Welhither's 49 725.0, Lonetar 730, Piedmont Cleveland 780, Shiver's 725, Station Cleveland 438.8, Durango 706.7, Wanamakis Cleveland 647.5, Letts Early 640, Deflos 6102 613.33, Express 782 611.7, King's 605, Deflos 631 596.7, Express 350 570, Sunpres 565, Carters Patient 536.7, Trice 606.7, Lightning Express 451.7, Express 453 420. Former Governor J. C. Walton, John A. Whitehurst and three other state officials plus a former employee were indicted by a district court grand jury for alleged offenses during Walton's administration. Seven indictments are already pending against the ex governor for irregularities in his office.

The Baptist Fundamental League in New York announced a demand for a thorough investigation into reports that Baptist foreign missionaries preach doctrines contrary to the denomination. President Dr John Roach Straton of Calvary Baptist Church said the league rejected the mission board’s finding and will issue evidence and action soon.
State highway department adopts a re organization plan maintaining district offices in Americus with nineteen counties under the Americus division. Caye steps down January 1 and C. L. Rhodes, current Waycross division engineer, will take over Americus duties while Caye joins Cave Andrews Company as a consulting engineer.
Macon reports show 1928 total business at 251,881,620.60, up 38,000,000 from 1927, marking one of the city’s strongest financial years. December activity remained solid with weekly total of 5,292,457.17 versus 4,649,908.28 last year as the year closed.
An automobile loaded with about 50 gallons of whisky was found wrecked early Thursday at the Campbell station crossing on the Nashville Chattanooga St Louis line about 10 miles from Marietta. Officers reported the Dixie Flyer likely struck the car. the owner could not be located.
New York authorities report Ernest and Marie Veter were sentenced to eight to 10 years imprisonment each for first degree manslaughter in the May killing of Alonzo J. Story. The case drew headlines for an unusual motive involving the man and woman.
Valdosta hosts a joint Methodist meeting January 8 and 9 with ministers from South Georgia and Florida conferences led by Bishop W. N. Answorth. Four people died when a car driven by Arthur P Beaudreau of Cambridge crashed through a wooden railing and fell into 120 feet of water near Wayland Massachusetts. The deceased were Beaudreau, his housekeeper Mrs Bertha Méndie and her son and daughter.
Evan Mathis was installed as president of the Americus Kiwanis club for the coming year at a ladies night event at the Windsor hotel. Also installed were Sam R. Heys as vice president T. O. Marshall as secretary and treasurer. The well attended occasion featured entertaining guests and enthusiastic participation by members.
Waycross reporter notes W. T. Brinson called the biggest Elk in the world posed before a Pathe Exchange camera. A closeup showed him stepping into a car. Brinson weighs over 600 pounds and made the scene a local spectacle on December 28.
Senate commerce committee chair Jones recommends extending coastwise shipping laws to the Philippines. The panel urges separating the emergency fleet corporation from the shipping board, mandating railway and shipping cooperation, and surveying needs for a permanent merchant marine. The recommendations follow President Coolidge’s request.
At a Lions Club meeting in the Windsor hotel's private dining room, Americus, R. P. Ewing was elected president with J. T. Stokes, Milo H. Massey, Sam L. McDaniel, C. A. Ames, H. E. Allen, L. C. Medford, W. M. Andrews, Carlos H. Wheatley and Frank E. Matthews named officers and trustees for the coming year. The group is active in civic affairs and expected to guide a second successful year.
