At Atlanta on December 17 five people died in two automobile accidents. W. P. Singleton his wife and two children were killed when their car was struck by a Georgia Railroad switch engine at a grade crossing. Mrs. Fannie E. Young was killed when her car collided with another vehicle while riding with her brother.
The Bumter court ruled to quash the indictment against Harp in the Walter Wade murder case. Harp had been indicted alongside Dr. K and Warren I Johnson, as convicted principals, and had faced liberty issues while the defense moved to dismiss the charges. Witnesses Kipman Jr and Ethridge were present at Wade’s death. The case has seen lengthy bail considerations for several years.
Wallace will grade hogs at the first sale in the new pen on Spring Street. Sele Wallace to oversee the event with George in charge. expect one to two carloads of hogs despite a weak market. The sale, around noon, aims to move ready hogs as farmers prepare for market while grading proceeds. Carl Wallace of the State College Swine Dept will be present to grade the hogs.
Major Devereaux F. McClatchey of Atlanta state organizer for the American Cotton association and Wired A. F. Hodges chairman of the Sumter county association announce an experienced organizer will attend the cotton meeting at the Carnegie Library at 10:30 Thursday. Wealth of bankers, factors and business men are expected to attend to discuss the industry’s welfare.
In Americus only a small number of qualified voters went to the polls to ratify the recent city council primary results, where three men were nominated. The election board, which occupied the polling place, reported light turnout and routine procedures.
Rhode Island Attorney General Herbert Rice asked the Supreme Court for permission to institute original proceedings to test the validity of the national prohibition amendment and to enjoin federal officials from enforcing it in the state.
L Sprayberry longtime manager of the Western Union Telegraph office in Americus is transferred to Superintendent Ragsdale in Atlanta to assume new clerical and road duties. Mrs Mott, former manager at Dawson, will succeed him as Americus manager.
In Vienna, Democrat E. F. Powell defeated incumbent mayor J. W. Lytle in a close primary 106 to 96. P. A. Lennard and E. C. Taylor were elected aldermen, ending Lytle’s three consecutive terms.
Shriners of Americus and Sumter County are called by Sam Heys, ambassador of Alee Temple, to meet at the courthouse at 5:30. The call invites members to decide on temple matters and gather for the session. Short notice emphasizes the courthouse gathering and leadership role for the event.
Cholmeley Jones told representatives that about 197000 war disability claims have been disallowed. The injuries proved only temporary, forcing denial.
Frank and Crawley brothers captured after a high profile chase in north Georgia were convicted of harboring World War I deserters. Felix Crawley drew four months in federal penitentiary while Frank Crawley received two months. George and Decatur Crawley await death sentences for the murder of Deputy Marshal Ben Dixon during an attempted arrest.
A blast at an ammunition depot in Berlin killed 43 people while unloading supplies. Authorities report many more injured as rescue crews search the site for survivors and assess the extent of damage.
P. H. Randall, executive of Fulton county road forces, will become Sumter County road construction superintendent at 250 dollars monthly, reporting January 1. Half the convict gang will be used in new construction under Randall, the other half under J. W. Lassiter for repairs. State Highway Engineer Neal advised against a 96000 dollar contract for the senate roadway site, urging bituminous macadam and convict labor for first project at about 18 dollars per mile.

Washington December 17 Franklin K Lane secretary of the interior issued a statement denying reports that he has placed his resignation before the president but said he intends to leave the cabinet when he can do so without adding to the presidents burdens or worries.
Judge Littlejohn in Superior Court sentenced Sallie Fuller to a six to twelve month stockade for making whiskey. Several codefendants faced charges including intent to murder and shooting at another, with terms ranging from 12 months to 32 months and fines up to $180. The scattered report also mentions Sam Gibson, a colored man, indicted for assault and fined 75 dollars with time served.
Sentences ranged from one month in jail to a year and a day in penitentiary with fines from 100 to 1000 dollars. Named defendants include Andrew Fenn Crisp county 100 dollars James H Smith Crisp county year and one day Otis Roberts Lee county three months and 100 dollars Henry Royal Crisp county three Webster Powell Lee county four Hartwell W Bass Crisp county one year and one day.
Emergency coal arrived just in time to avert supperless night in Americus though many homes faced only cold lunches. A carload for the gas plant proved unfit for gas making and another delivery came later. The gas supply nearly ran out around 11 o'clock, with torches and relief efforts aiding the area.

London December 17 Justice Sir John Sankey of the King's Bench division declared the government has no power to prohibit importation of certain goods and that such an order to that effect is invalid. The ruling is regarded as one of the most important ever rendered against the government.
The regular city council meeting scheduled for Thursday night December 18 is postponed to Monday night December 22 because three council members were absent.

Plains plans bid opening for a 20,500 bond issue and 6,500 for electric light bonds. The town’s special election approved the financing. Bonds issued in 500 dollar denominations mature annually from January 1, 1921, with final terms extending through 194.
