Memorials were presented to the Senate in Washington against the Chicago World’s Fair opening. Debates touched a $5 million government loan to the Columbian exposition, woman suffrage, coast life-saving service expansion, and an elected Senate by popular vote. Dawes proposed a Niagara Falls ship canal. House session was brief. Speaker Crisp named the Rules Committee as McMillin, Catchings, Reed, Burrows. Rep Bartin sworn in. Rep Houk of Tennessee died, House adjourned in his memory. Crisp unveiled a gavel from Americus landing.
In Americus, Dr W C Russell a Cuthbert native and pharmacist, died in his sleep at about midnight. An autopsy cited heart paralysis. A coroner's inquest ruled death from unknown causes. The funeral funds, telegraphed to relatives in Cuthbert for interment, follow. A sister survives. Also, Miss Mattie Walters wed Mr Q W Fuller near Americus, with Rev H Stubbs officiating.
A report details Miles Walker and allyTom Green plotting to murder conductor Snyder and trigger a vendetta. Levi Daniel warned authorities, leading to a gunfight aboard a Webster County train. Green captured and jailed for six months. Chas Allen convicted of arson, five years in the penitentiary. J.G. Lunsford family mourns multiple deaths and looming hardship in Weston.
In 1889 a sensational murder at Johnston's station on the Flint River is revived in court. Hamp Swain was killed after a card game. John Green testified that Boley Daniel was the killer. The trial before Judge Fish continues with state and defense arguments and jurors seated. Intertwined notes warn of death in the community as well as a later obituary for Mrs. Cato of Americus. The Sumter County Alliance plans its January 1892 meeting with delegations urged.
