Most disastrous wreck on North Carolina rails at Third Creek

Aug 20 report details a brutal collision on the Western North Carolina line at Third Creek bridge. Of fifty aboard, twenty two died and twenty six injured as townspeople of Statesville and nearby gathered to care for victims. Tramps suspected to have tampered with rails. A New Plan to Control Cotton Prices in the Belt

A scheme drafted in Columbia aims to form county trust companies with capital of 20 000 to 30 000 dollars. Each will take one third of local cotton as subscription and hold it in trust for a year to push prices up. If adopted nationwide, about six and a half million bales could be withdrawn, lifting prices to about ten cents per pound.

Boy Charlie Hawkins Injured Falling From Coop

Yesterday evening eight or nine year old Charlie Hawkins, son of Charles Hawkins, fell from a chicken coop at J. T. Joiner’s, injuring his left hand above the wrist. He was brought home and received prompt medical care, resting easily last night. Simons telegram hints at a capture and return plans involving Jasper, Fia, and Col. BE.
