In Marysville Tennessee on August 29 a mistrial was declared as jurors failed to reach a verdict in the case of William D. Sheffey charged with murdering Luther Wells. The trial drew large crowds over eleven days amid intense local interest in a series of nocturnal home invasions.

Trains Bring Cotton Pickers Into Louisiana

Two special trains from Houston and Fort Worth are to bring cotton pickers to Shreveport Louisiana amid a local shortage. The service, organized by the chamber of commerce and railroad officials, was expected to arrive Sunday and ease the picker shortage in the area.

A and M School to Open With Record Enrollment

The Third District Agricultural and Mechanical school will open its 1925 26 term Monday August 7 with the largest enrollment in its history. Professor J M Prance predicts a banner year as 70 percent of the 4175 students are girls. Dormitories are full and faculty from last year return, some after summer study in southern universities.

City Council met Friday night with a small agenda. A Kiwanis committee was granted permission to hold a county fair in October with free water and police protection promised. A. Big Haul Quaker Thugs Rob Pay Car in Philadelphia

Seven men held up a Philadelphia Rapid Transit pay car at Sixth and Willow, escaping with 9100 after a pistol battle with the crew. Reading railway fireman Fred Wagner rushed to aid the car crew and was badly beaten. The robbers wore stockings with eye slits and fled in an automobile.

Beer Baron Charged With Buying Liberty

Chicago Aug 29 Federal agents sift rumors that a $20,000 fund helped Terry Druggan beer baron gain freedom from jail at night during a yearlong sentence for violating a federal injunction. Two assistant jailers were discharged in connection with the liberation.

Report on July Fireworks Casualties Reveals High Toll

A survey by the American Museum of Safety and the National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness shows 111 deaths and 1,030 injuries from this year's Fourth of July celebrations across 500 cities in 36 states. Sheriff Breach Met By Fierce Stand For Bill Cheek

Three warrants charging assault with intent to murder and resisting arrest were sworn on Will Cheek after deputies found whiskey in his Leslie road home. Sheriff McArthur and Lieut Worthey confronted Cheek as he drew a pistol, struggled, and were aided by Deputy Chappell to subdue and cuff him. Cheek, about 65, fought vigorously amid a tense arrest at the county jail scene.

Pauline Livingston a 24 year old Nashville stenographer and sweetheart of Irving Schlig is held for questioning after the bodies of Schlig and gangster Harry Brennan were found near Asburn field. Police seized valuable jewels from her possession to check against a list of stolen articles tied to Schligs robbery and safe blowing. Her apartment search yielded no clues to the slayings.

Negroe typhoid immunization drive expands countywide

Sixty seven negroes began typhoid serum this week following a county health board call. Dr. J. W. Chambliss notes hundreds more should submit. He cites 3,384 people immunized in Sumter County over three years, white and black. Free vaccine is offered daily except Sundays. teams will vaccinate groups of 25 or more anywhere in the county.

Walter Bell, chairman of the legion committee, reports that about half of Americas merchants have agreed to buy flags and sockets for installation between the white way lights. Posse Hunts Slayer of Two County Police

In Jones County Georgia a large posse from Gray hunts moonshiners after county policeman Floyd Malone and deputy Frank Tucker were shot and killed near Cheates mill. The bodies were found by a boy fishing, and the deaths prompted preparations for a joint funeral service.

Dumas sworn coroner after fatal moonshiner killings in Gray

E Dumas sworn in as coroner to probe the shooting deaths of Floyd Malone, a county policeman, and deputy Frank Tucker. A jury rules the deaths were murders by unknown assailants.
