Governor Walker signs the Confederate pension script bill totaling about 4.5 million dollars. If satisfactory bids are not received in thirty days, he may call a special session to retire the issue. He also signals potential action on repealing the state inheritance tax and outlines financing for pensions.
Atlanta dispatch says an extraordinary General Assembly session is inevitable due to shortages in funds. It may occur this year or be delayed to mid or late next year. Governor Walker will not sign any appropriation bills except the Milledgeville women's college building grant of $195,000. the rest require further action.
John H. Uhl, a no strike advocate from Wilkes-Barre, chased John L. Lewis for 12 miles by automobile from Hazelton to Philadelphia and returned with renewed hopes that a suspension of mining in the anthracite region might be avoided. Fred C Nickel a prominent Dayton Ohio businessman confessed to robbing a local bank of 21000 dollars wearing a blue mask. His arrest followed his niece Miss Helen Sammett’s statement to police describing the robber’s disguise as a gray mustache and mask.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr and associates have purchased or optioned eleven thousand acres near Atlanta to establish the third largest commercial air base in the country. Engineers have prepared surveys and plans, with flying expected from Atlanta to New Orleans and Florida by Christmas. The facility will handle freight and mail, not passengers, and may include dirigible accommodations.
A negro working for the city in Prospect Park Brooklyn Heights dropped dead after noon while chopping underbrush. He began work at noon and was last seen staggering at about 3 pm before Engineer Walker arrived.
Augustus Lukeman’s central group design for the Stone Mountain Confederate memorial received official approval from the association’s board in Atlanta. The sketch will be enlarged to the master model size, featuring seven principal figures in the central group.
Seven persons died when a boiler exploded at a mun nery near Uniontown Alabama. The victims include C. J. Buchanan and six Black men who have not yet been identified. The event occurred at Dayton, near Uniontown, on August 27.
In Miami on August 27 a woman, believed to be Mrs. Clara Des Lauriers of Duluth Minnesota, died when she was pinioned between an elevator and a shaft while trying to board. Witnesses said she rushed the door and fell as the elevator moved, breaking a collar bone. Hotel records identified her as arriving in Miami five days earlier.
Four people died when a rowboat capsized in a heavy sea on Lake Ontario near Rochester New York today. Two men and two girls were drowned while one man swam to safety.
Dorothy Ellingson, 17, convicted of manslaughter after two murder trials, was sentenced to one to ten years in San Quentin prison. The San Francisco case was resolved today with the note that her conviction followed prior murder charges and retrials.
Troops from Camp Benning, Georgia began removing underground water lines and plumbing at Souther Field in Columbus. The effort leaves only hangars and structures, prompting the officer in charge to doubt the site will ever be repurposed for industry.
Dr. Thomas W. Young a Los Angeles dentist on murder trial killed himself in county jail. After allegedly burying his wife in a cistern a jail worker found his body hanged by wire, the death occurring before the jurors could inspect the cistern area.
New York August 27 AP reports Governor Al Smith prepares for his first campaign appearance in Brooklyn as crowds gather amid the ongoing political drama in the state.
Three Americus youths, Daniel and Samuel Everett and P C Allen, were badly injured when their car collided with a second vehicle occupied by several Negro occupants near the top of Scarborough hill. A Negro woman in the other car sustained painful injuries. The Everett boys are sons of Mrs. Marvin Everett. The injured were not seriously hurt.
SAN ANTONIO August 27 Mexico will begin paying her five hundred million dollar debt September first Mexican Consul General Elias said here today The debt is owed chiefly to the United States.
Albany reports that Columbus Electric and Power Company plans to acquire Georgia Alabama Power Company interests in Albany and South Georgia. The move would create extensive power ties, enabling unlimited facilities across Albany Americus Cordele Tifton Valdosta and smaller towns, with hydro plants at Flint River Muckafoonee Creek and Pautaula Creek Fort Gaines aiding expansion.
The Buffalo Express, a crack Pennsylvania passenger train, northbound from Pittsburg, was wrecked at Braeburn twenty miles from Pittsburg today. The engineer and fireman were injured, the former seriously, with several passengers shaken but none seriously hurt. The locomotive express, mail and baggage cars derailed and left the roadbed.
J. N. Collier of Americus is ill in Cordele after a paralysis stroke Saturday. He travels for a living with Americus as his headquarters and has lived here five years. Mrs. Collier and their children are at his bedside in Cordele hospital, with condition reported favorable this morning.
Napier aout 30 years old was convicted of rape of a 12 year old in Cordele and sentenced to death by electrocution on October 5. The jury deliberated over three hours and defense insanity plea may be entered. The crime occurred after Napier offered to drive the girl home from Cordele where she was changing trains. The case drew a large quiet crowd as details remained guarded. (Continued on Page Six)
