The American Express company asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to raise express rates by over 43 million dollars to absorb a recent wage award. It also sought a twenty percent rate increase on milk and cream to offset railroad advances.
A new sleeper service between Columbus and New York, inaugurated by the Central of Georgia, A. and W. P., and Southern railroads, leaves Columbus at 3 30 p m via Newnan and Atlanta. Passengers from Americus via the Sea Board Air Line depart at 10 10 a m and reach Columbus by 1 00 p m ready for dinner in the city before continuing to Atlanta and eastern markets.
New York dispatch reports the body of Major General Gorgas landed on U S soil and transported for burial. One of thirteen officers to receive honors, the general’s funeral plan includes burial in Adlington Cemetery.
Violent earthquake tremors lasting thirty three minutes were recorded by the seismograph in the government observatory in Mexico City today. Experts said the center of the disturbance was about 2,206 miles distant.

Debate on appropriations lingered, with pundits predicting an extra session in November to finish pending bills.
Frank Broadhurst, a 6 year old son of R S Broadhurst, has grown a unique cotton stalk with 57 rolls on a single stalk.
