Premier Herriot announced a conference on inter allied debts to be held soon in Paris or London. The date and venue remain undecided. United States representatives were not part of the decision to hold debt parleys.
Atlanta August 9. Southern Railway passenger train No. 9 traveling south from Atlanta to Jacksonville ran into an open switch about 80 miles south of Macon early today. No one was killed or seriously hurt according to the report.
Epworth Leaguers from Sumter County will gather Tuesday at the Ellaville Methodist Church for a union meeting hosted by Ellaville. A big barbecue will entertain visitors and delegates amid the growing Sumter County Epworth League Union formed with Americus First and Lee Street, Plains, Leslie, Anthony Chapel, Salem, and Ellaville churches. The Ellaville church joins the union and nearby counties may join. The aim is church unity and fellowship, led by laymen with Elmo Babb attending from Colquitt. Robert McNeill will direct the meeting and organize the movement.
In Atlanta the Georgia House passed two measures to boost state revenue. One amends the tobacco tax law clarifying definitions and stamping requirements for retailers receiving products from wholesalers. The other requires tax collectors to record occupational taxes. A third act amends and clarifies the general tax act to augment the treasury.
Atlanta August 9 The Georgia senate adjourned Friday with no immediate plans for reconvening. Continued on page 3.
Pulaski county reports its first bale of the season brought in by R. M. Cohn. It sold for 30 cents per pound. The crop is unusually large with few weevils, and many more bales are expected next week.
Bale weighing 470 pounds graded strict low sold at auction for 31.4 cents per pound. C L Cook ginned the bale here Friday and R C McNair was the winning bidder.
Lucas Thiers announced the first trials start November 17 under the Southwest Georgia Field Trials Association. The Lipsey place in Lee county hosts the meet with over a hundred dogs expected. John C. Grant, veteran trainer from Courtland Alabama, will attend in Americus along with many sportsmen from Atlanta and Macon. Membership nears one hundred as the association grows across its territory.
John Johnson and his son Malcolm Johnson of Phenix City Alabama were arrested on whiskey transport charges after allegedly eluding Fort Benning authorities by swimming the Chattahoochee River. The father is jailed at the Seal and the son is in custody.
Dr. H. Hulberta, the defense alienist, concluded direct testimony in the Nathan Peppold Jr and Richard Loeb murder case. The hearing before Judge John Caverly resumed for its 16th day in Chicago with experts poised to occupy the entire session.
Atlanta August 9 Senator William J Harris reports broad Georgia support for re election to the senate as he departs to attend the Davis presidential nominating ceremonies at Clarksburg. He cites farm bloc aid to farmers and business and notes high endorsements from Georgia legislators and newspapers. He mentions statewide polls showing a roughly 20 to 1 favorable ratio and touts his five year senate record.
John W. Davis returned to West Virginia to receive formal notification of his Democratic presidential nomination. He arrived by early train from New York and planned to spend time with friends and neighbors before Monday’s ceremonies.
American light heavyweight Tom Gibbons stopped English contender Jack Bloomfield in the third round at Wembley Stadium in London this afternoon, delivering a decisive victory in their scheduled 22% bout.
General Primo de Rivera will stay as head of the Spanish government after an interview with King Alfonso. The military directory will remain in power as rumors that the king would force a change were denied. De Rivera cited that distrust upon arrival was dissipated and described no change in the governing arrangement.
The Pace Baby Bond bill reported from Atlanta as tabled in the senate was in fact passed by that body on Tuesday August 5 by a 35 to 6 vote. It now awaits action in the house where constitutional amendments committee has recommended passage and a vote is expected early next week.
Marshal Foch expected to cast the vote that will decide the Dawes reparations plan. Premier Herriot and associates depart London for Paris to seek his approval before any definite action on evacuating the Ruhr can occur.
Interest is shown in a baseball game Wednesday between Joe Jackson and his Waycross Coast Liners and the Valdosta All-Star team. The fundraising match will benefit the Playground association with much of the proceeds to the organization. A large crowd is expected from out of town, with preparations underway to entertain visitors.
In Atlanta on August 9 a ceremony announced Norman C. Miller, a prominent Atlanta figure, as director of the Golden Cross Society for the North Georgia Conference. Miller leads hospital charity activities for the society under Major R. J. Guinn, with Bill Candler as head and Rev. C. Jarrell guiding the Atlanta area, coordinating hospital board efforts.
In Birmingham area a brutal axe attack leaves Mae dron Collins dead and her infant dead. the mother in critical condition as deputies and residents hunt a suspect identified as John Milton, a convict from a nearby camp. The assailant reportedly sprang from a roadside thicket and attacked as the woman and baby passed.
Clarksburg West Virginia on August 9 prepares for Democratic Presidential nominee John W. Davis arrival from New York. A townwide decoration effort and a 8 p.m. Golf Plaza notification ceremony mark the welcome with Senator Thomas J. Walsh delivering the notification address and Davis delivering his acceptance speech. Program includes band music and community singing.
August 9 Norman Park reports the Kiwanis Club of Tampa voted to send three boys to Norman Institute next year. The Institute was chosen amid interest from Southern schools and catalogs sent to Tampa’s Educational Committee.
Jacksonville August 9 Detectives investigate the disappearance of Mrs Ethel Shackelford wife of R A Shackelford of Homeland Ga She left home with her 15 year old step daughter and a young man en route to Jacksonville and has not been heard from since The husband says he has enlisted South Georgia authorities and asked Detective Hulbert to notify Florida police He describes the wife as weighing 125 pounds with hair and eyes and about five feet high The husband fears marital troubles and loss of the children
