Norman Roberts, expected for arraignment on a failure to provide charge, shot his wife in a courthouse corridor and opened fire on a patrolman. The patrolman returned fire and killed Roberts as he tried to flee. Domestic tensions had led to the summons.
A First Christian church audience heard Mr. Ramsey declare neglect of salvation offered by God’s love as the greatest sin against the greatest love. He urged high ambition in physical mental and spiritual life and dismissed the unpardonable sin as inapplicable to the congregants. He announced Europe’s First Convert as the evening topic and linked Europe’s example to war history.
Winona Lake Indiana August report cites Judge W H Thomas saying divorces rise with population and America lacks a uniform national marriage law. His world survey of 54 countries notes Rome and Babylon patterns and warns that chaotic marriage laws threaten national life, urging a uniform law nationwide.
In Springfield Georgia on August 9 John Williams a Black man testified in magistrate court about killing G U Trueblood aged 58 a recluse near Abercorn to operate Truebloods moonshine still. Williams named another Black man Allen as an accomplice and police seek him for complicity in the murder.
A. P. I. students heard that Douglas Roby, star halfback at Michigan, would not coach Auburn’s backfield this fall. Roby, signed months ago, was counted on to help the new staff shape a squad to rival the Donahue era teams, leaving Auburn without the expected aid.
CORD ELE August 9 S J Culpepper brought the first bale of new cotton for Crisp county late Wednesday. It came from Hatley farm, ginned at the Diffee ginnery and sold to the Sheppard & Wright warehouse at 34 cents a pound. Seed sold to Diffee Cotton company at 35 a ton. The bale graded as good middling and marks the fourth straight year the Sheppard & Wright warehouse has secured the first bale.

The funeral train bearing President Harding’s body halted one minute at Canton Ohio in tribute to the late William McKinley. McKinley, assassinated years ago by Czoboz, was a political mentor and close friend to Harding.
The funeral train bearing Warren G. Harding crosses the Marion county line at 12 13 today two miles from Blooming Grove near where he was born. Crowds slow progress as bells toll and residents recall the late president. Tomorrow services contrast with Washington ceremonies and Friday cemetery rites will be brief and simple per Mrs. Harding’s wishes.
The Georgia Senate approved Senator Stephen Pace's bill to place salaries on county officers in counties with 25 000 or more population. If the House passes it, the measure would be put to voters at the next general election as a constitutional amendment. A previous Pace measure would consolidate tax collector and tax receiver offices, which current constitution forbids for salary placement.
Poultry men of Americus and Sumter county meet Friday at 10 in the Chamber of Commerce basement to organize a Sumter poultry association and plan a fair exhibit for September 25 to 29. They will discuss a cash poultry market in Americus to help farmers sell fowls, attract buyers from major markets, and boost a buyers agency and creditable exhibit to drive sales in the following year.

Mayor J E Poole issues a proclamation calling all residents to attend memorial services for President Warren G Harding at the Rylander Theater Americus on August 10 1923 from 245 to 315 PM. City offices close and employees urged to attend to show national sorrow and respect for the late chief executive.
Paris August 9 The court of cassation rejected the appeal of Baron Krupp Von Bohlen head of the Essen Krupp plant and other Krupp directors. The court overruled defense claims the offenses were not in enemy territory. All accused face sentences up to 20 years for sabotage in occupied Ruhr territory.
The Americus Rotary Club held a brief memorial during a luncheon at the Tea Room for Rotarian President Warren G. Harding. Felis Mathis gave a simple eulogy praising the late leader as a man of high ideals and Christian character, followed by silent tribute. The club also sent a telegram of condolence to Mrs. Harding from Secretary Luther Harrell.
Atlanta August 9 In assuming control of legislative procedure the rules committee sidetracked the general tax act and placed the Milner cigaret tax and Ennis revenue department measures on the calendar for consideration. Representative Stewart of Atkinson said he objected only to the calendar as proposed. Milner cited growth from 300 to 2000 cigar firms in Georgia and denied claims the tax would hurt tobacco growers, noting a North Carolina firm asked dealers to oppose the measures.
Cordele, August 9. J. L. Tucker, formerly Moultrie agent for American Express, promoted to route agent with headquarters at Vidalia, was here Wednesday consulting with local officials. He will visit Cordele often in his new post. He is a young, splendid, very enthusiastic representative of his company.
City and county offices will close as Americans to attend the memorial for President Warren G. Harding. The service at Rylander Theater in Americas, led by John D. Mathis Post, runs 2:45 to 3:15 pm with a funeral hour at Marion. Afterward, manager Kincey will show moving pictures, per Mayor Poole's proclamation.
President Winburn outlines a two year 400000 decrease in loss and damage payouts for freight. He emphasizes good freight service, proper handling, and cooperation of shippers as key to reducing waste and avoiding supply delays. He notes secure packing and containers deter theft and pledges improved service and efficiency records.
