Schools Face 1923 Deficiency Payment Crisis

Atlanta August 10 There are no funds in the state treasury to cover 1923 deficiency appropriations for common schools unless revenues due the schools are diverted. Chairman Culpepper stated $625,000 is owed to the common schools and has not been paid by the governor, making it impossible to meet the deficiency.

Swainsboro August 10 Sead Johnson a negro was hanged at 1 50 PM the trap sprung by Sheriff Coleman. He was convicted of murdering his wife her sister and their niece in 1920 after two years in jail. The case was reviewed by the supreme court and prison commission which declined to interfere. Governor Walker had earlier declined to intervene.
