Louvain reports Kentucky's 800 distilleries largely closed, with about 18 months of stoppage beginning August 1 to address overproduction and tax increases. Whiskey will not be marketed for four and a half years, though 8,000,000 gallons remain in bonded warehouses to supply genuine Kentucky bourbon once production resumes.
At 3 am Tuesday a fire destroyed Richard Dodd's Prospect street home, with his son waking him barely in time. Dodd and neighbor James Woodock are quarry workers who employ nonunion crews. both homes were targeted with oil and dynamite, raising threats of lynching against culprits. Chicago banks deposit gold to strengthen federal treasury, totaling 2,245,000 with 12,500,000 in the city office.
Chicago reports say Moore Brothers promoters of the Diamond Match and New York Biscuit companies have failed. The Stock Exchange adjourned indefinitely as news spread, with officials noting the firms’ extensive stock holdings and the impact on related businesses. A Madrid dispatch reports a massive fire at Rueda de Medina, a town of about 4 000 residents twenty five miles southwest of Valladolid. The blaze endangers homes and stores as fire units battle to contain it.
