New York August 3 Deputy Superintendent McKellar and Sergeant Reynolds of Brooklyn received a message from Atlanta police asking about a man named John Cushman arrested Sunday at the urging of R A Smith who claimed to be a Brooklyn detective. Officials said they knew nothing and did not want Cushman, noting no such murder occurred at 82 Green Point Avenue and that the only Brooklyn detective named Smith is in Brooklyn.
Frederick Whitney, an 18 year term convict, confessed to warden Weyler that he had killed and robbed an old man in Altoona in April last year while fleeing Baltimore officers. Whitney, real name Joe Hildebrand from Detroit, previously escaped from Little Rock prison six years ago with nine others. Witnesses doubt his statements, and Altoona reports show inconsistencies.
