Warren T. McCreary resigned as Indiana governor before sentencing in U S district court for using the mails to defraud. He received a 10 year federal term to Atlanta and a $10,000 fine. He is held in Marion County Jail awaiting continued legal action.
A sequence of tornadoes swept across a dozen towns in four Southern states causing extensive property damage estimated at millions. More than 20 people were killed and over forty injured. Anderson South Carolina saw the heaviest loss, while Lake Charles Louisiana Memphis Tennessee Auburn Alabama and Chipley Georgia also reported fatalities and damage. Medical teams from Spartanburg aided Walnut Grove nearby. The Frickling depot near Washington was demolished.
Governor Warren T. McCray was found guilty by a federal jury in Indianapolis of using the mails to advance a fraud scheme. Judge Anderson ordered his confinement in Marion County jail, with sentencing due Wednesday at 9 a.m. Possible penalties include a fine up to 1000 dollars, up to five years imprisonment, or both, at the court’s discretion. President Coolidge will receive the Commission on International Justice and Goodwill of the Federal Council of Churches to present church views on the Japanese exclusion section of the immigration bill. Griffin Georgia April 30. Editor Robert J. Duke announced the Griffin News and Sun has been sold to C. C. Givens of Madisonville Kentucky. The sale takes effect July 1. Duke may stay on in a different role. The new owner plans to lease larger quarters and greatly enlarge and improve the newspaper.
Americas merchants begin their ordinary summer closing tomorrow at noon with most stores featuring special items. Shoppers are urged to procure ample supplies before the closing hour to avoid shortages during the period.
