No Cuorah Present for Senate Session

Washington May 1 So many investigations and hearings are being made in Washington today that the senate sergeant at arms was forced to invade some chambers to round up a sufficient number of members to carry on the business of the floor where the tax bill is under consideration. Hoping to get an early start Chairman Smoot of the finance committee obtained consent to convene an hour earlier. Two roll calls failed to bring a quorum. After two minutes the quorum number appeared.

ABE BUZZARD LEAVES PRISON AFTER 22 YEARS

Philadelphia May 1 Alike Buzzard once one of the Welch mountain region's most desperate desperadoes has spent forty two years behind bars. He was released from the Eastern State Penitentiary on Thursday as his thirteen year sentence expired. Buzzard is 72 today and plans to become a prison evangelist, devoting the rest of his life to aiding convicts after studying theology and the Scriptures.

Lytle Ordered to Pay Alimony for 20 Years

In Fulton superior court Judge E D Thomas awarded Mrs Margaret Lytle alimony of 45 dollars monthly to last until their child turns 21. The decree followed Mrs Lytle's cross bill amid claims of cruel treatment and threats with a butcher knife. Lytle, son of Louise Lytle, previously with the state highway department and linked to The Jeffersonian and The Columbia Sentinel, reportedly paid no temporary alimony.

Will Examine Her Sanity

New York May 1 Examinations of the mental condition of Celie Cooney and her husband Edward are to be conducted by two commissions appointed by County Judge Martin in Brooklyn today. The move follows reports that Cooney’s father died in an insane asylum ten years ago and that the prisoner shows mental deficiency. Judge Martin also ordered a commission to examine Cooney after a motion to set aside her guilty plea to pursue a temporary insanity defense.

Floridan and Dixie Limit Trains Discontinued For Season

The Floridan and the Dixie Limited tourist trains through Americus on the Central of Georgia railroad have been discontinued for the season. The last run was Tuesday the Floridan heading north. Officials expect restoration next fall as the specials proved a great success and drew many riders. The Floridan had become bidirectional on some days last year.

Columbus plans for the playground and recreation program move ahead as W. J. Cartier, director of recreation, maps groundwork and equipment needs ahead of the June opening. Training class plans are prepared, with most instructors chosen, signaling a successful course to begin next Saturday.

Indiana Governor Dons Prison Uniform in Atlanta

Warren T. McCray former Indiana governor convicted of mail fraud begins a 10 year sentence at the federal prison in Atlanta. He will be photographed fingerprinted examined issued a blue denim uniform and assigned a temporary cell. Hair shaving is no longer practiced and all prisoners must bathe on arrival.

Sympathy for tornado victims voiced by former Indiana governor

Warren McCray, ex governor of Indiana, expressed sympathy for southern tornado victims before his federal penitentiary transfer in Atlanta. He spoke at Rome during a brief train stop from Indianapolis and contrasted the tragedy with his trial news. A second prisoner escaped from Ohio officials while being moved to the penitentiary near Shelbyville.

Child Welfare Clinic Set to Open May 7 in Columbus

Barn Blown Down on Burke Plantation Mules Unhurt

Early dispatches report a high wind at the former John W. Burke plantation in Lee county destroying a large barn. Although many fences and trees were damaged nearby, the barn collapse left all but a few pigs uninjured, and no other major losses noted in that area.

Southeast tornado disaster toll rises across six states

ATLANTA May 1. A massive storm system left at least 95 dead and over 20 missing with about 500 injured and hundreds homeless. Tornadoes struck sever al areas in South Carolina Georgia Alabama North Carolina Virginia Louisiana and Arkansas, causing an estimated 10 million dollars in damage as wires and roads failed. Early reports list 66 dead in South Carolina 18 in Georgia 11 in Alabama 3 in North Carolina 1 in Louisiana and 1 in Arkansas with more casualties expected as isolated communities struggle to contact responders.

Body of Gen Carr En Route Home from Chicago

General Julian S. Carr former commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans died in Chicago from pneumonia. His body left at 1 p.m. for Durham North Carolina via Washington on the Baltimore and Ohio and Seaboard Air Line. Funeral date set for next Monday. Mrs H C Flowers, Carr�s daughter, reported from the hotel in Chicago and said many messages from friends poured in.

Eleven Negroes Die In Thompson Storm In Alabama

Eleven negroes were killed outright during Tuesdays storm at Thompson Alabama when most of the town's black section was destroyed. Thompson lies on the Central of Georgia railroad about ten miles from Eufaula.

Memorial services at Agnes Scott honor two longtime leaders

Memorial Services were held at Agnes Scott College in Decatur for Dr. F. H. Gaines and Dr. J. D. M. Armistead who died about a year ago. Gaines led the college for its first 34 years and Armistead taught English for 17 years. Baccalaureate preacher will be Dr. John Robertson McMahon and the senior address by Bruce R. Wheeler Indicted Scope of Senate Inquiry Details Fee Promise

Washington May 1 A special senate committee heard that Senator Wheeler promised to "take care of" land permits for Gordon Campbell in Montana. Rhea a Colorado oil man testified Campbell said Wheeler would be paid for it. The indictment charged Wheeler with a fee for appearing before the Interior Department.

In railroad circles preparations are under way for upcoming train changes. The Suwanee River Special will make its last run for the season on May 7, to be discontinued until next winter.
