Telegraphic reports from Bulawayo describe a nighttime British sortie near the besieged town. British forces, aided by Maxim and Hotchkiss guns, engaged Metabele troops, suffered losses but repelled an enemy surge before retreating to avoid encirclement. The action unfolded at dawn with heavy fighting, casualties on both sides, and continued pressure as the Metabelees pressed the defense of Bulawayo. An appended item notes ex governor of Michigan David H. Jerome's death in April.
James B. Alsop, arrested in April for the murder of Miss Lena Olsen in Duluth in August 1394, died by suicide in Seattle city jail. Police believe he influenced orders and may have killed Miss Olsen as well as connected crimes in Tacoma and Seattle. Mrs. Alsop of Salt Lake City claimed to be his wife and sent funds while he faced charges.
At Gallin tunnel on the Pittsburg division of the Pennsylvania railroad about 1 a m two trains collided. Three men were badly injured and several cars destroyed. Fireman J D McKendree of Altoona Brakeman T W Carnahan of Xoumro Pa Thomas Vincent and a negro porter were among the injured. One train consisted of two freight cars and empty Pollman cars. The crash caused a damage estimate of $35,000.
In Washington April 2 a private bill day in the house saw consented measures pass authorizing Tucson bonds of 100000 for water and sewer systems and duties refunds on exhibition exports. Pension bills favorable include one to pension the widow of Brigadier General Fortinaud. A prayer touched on world peace as the arbitration issue was noted.
