At Montgomery depot five hundred Democrats witnessed Sheriff Kennedy shoot and kill Percy Wood and wound Mardus Weed. The altercation arose over alleged illicit relations with Kennedy's wife. Wood, a Selma resident and Democratic official, traveled from Selma to confront Weed. Kennedy fired six times, killing Wood and injuring Weed. Wood had come to attend the Democratic state executive committee meeting.
