Quay's supporters cheered in corridors as he left with his counsel, planning a likely Washington trip for rest and family. District Attorney Rothermel indicated three indictments remain, with one involving a loan to Quay's son. Hawaspura later reported Governor Stone appointed M. S. Quay as senator to serve until the next session.
April 21 Knoxville dispatch reports Sheriff J. B. Dawson of Cocke County killed during a revenue raid in Cocke County near the North Carolina line. Chief Raiding Deputy J. D. Alton was shot in the coat, Dawson dying instantly. The mountains 25 miles from telegraph points, with moonshiner bands said to be nearby and reinforcements expected.
In the Dockery versus Bellamy congressional contest, ex chief John R. Melton testified in Raveram on April 21 about white gun carrying to intimidate black voters in Wilmington. He spoke of threats, skulls and the Big Six noting incendiary events, including arson at wharves, schools, resin stores, and a smallpox hospital, and said the chamber of commerce sought action from existing politics.
