Ninety two oil promoters were indicted by a federal grand jury in Atlanta on using the mails to defraud. Oil firms alleged to have absorbed 457 companies with combined stock sales totals of about $136,000,000, and cash receipts exceeding $7,000,000, as disclosed during the investigation leading to the indictments.
Americus residents will see Bugs McGowan perform daring aerial stunts Wednesday at 11 AM. Wing walking parachute jumping and midair maneuvers are planned as the famed daredevil, popular at Florida resorts, headlines a free show attracting hundreds in the business district.
Macon, April 20. In May 9 to 11 a three day festival will celebrate Macon’s one hundredth anniversary drawing about fifty thousand people from Georgia and the South. Five thousand local residents rehearse the historic pageant directed by Miss Olive Jackson of New York City. The pageant covers Middle Georgia history from DeSoto’s 1540 visit to the present era.
Albany April 20 The Albany Chamber of Commerce drive to add 500 members for three years each and raise 12500 annually succeeded as lunch workers announced 534 members. Campaign to continue with final totals expected above 500. Gordon E Reynolds chaired the committee.

The group adopts Studies in Citizenship from the University of Georgia as this year’s program and will discuss the first chapter Citizenship in a Democracy written by Dr. Thomas J. Wooster. Mrs Borchardt chairs the program.

Thousands of young pigs are being farrowed across Sumter county as shipping nears year end. George O. Marshall reports the county’s hog supply shrinking with one car load sold to Cuban butchers for 1200 dollars in Americas and two more cars set to ship to Jacksonville for export. only about five marketable meat hogs remain, likely to be sold next week. All hogs sold recently were corn fed and killing at a high rate.
In Valdosta April 20 authorities report no rush for government funds among farmers. A fifty thousand dollar allotment for Lowndes County Farm Loan Association from the Federal Land Bank at Columbia sits largely unclaimed. Few applicants for long loans, farming support wanes as quarters pass.
New York April 20 1954 Archibald Maddock president of Thomas Maddock's Sons Co Trenton New Jersey one of 93 pottery manufacturers convicted for conspiracy in restraint of trade was sentenced by Federal Judge Vanfleet to ten months in the penitentiary and a 5000 dollar fine. Seven other defendants described as Sanitary Potteries Association members active in price fixing received six months in jail and a 5000 dollar fine.
Mrs Anthony Wayne Cook of Pennsylvania was declared elected president general of the Daughters of the Revolution after a bitter election contest. She won 940 votes to 779 for her opponent Mrs G Wallace Hanger of Washington.
Atlanta April 20. Georgia reports 1923 first quarter building contracts totaling 27,913,900, the largest Southern state total for the period. Residential, public works, business, and educational projects share the quarter’s $18,128,100 Atlanta construction, with $10,891,600 for homes.
Mrs. H W Elder died at Wise Sanitarium after a brief illness in Richland. A longtime church worker she was active in local good causes and funeral services were held at Harmony Cemetery. Survived by husband Rev H W Elder and several sons and daughters in this community.
Webster county grand jury in a recent session proposed floating a bond issue of about 50 000 dollars to cover outstanding indebtedness and provide a cash surplus for annual operations at a discount. Citizens have long viewed Webster taxes as high and favor bond financing as a proper solution.
