Turkey grants the Chester syndicate sweeping concessions to modernize Angora and develop oil mining commercial railroad harbor and industrial capacity. The deal covers oil rights mining rights seaport docks dredges and contracts to build a modern capital and to deliver Turkey toward major agricultural and commercial status.
Valdosta April 18 The grand jury of Clinch county reported that a hundred head of cattle died from dipping last week, with only twenty two dying on March 28 and 29 while cattle dipped on other days survived. Jurors could not explain the deaths tied to those dates.
Washington April 18 Five of the fleet of wooden ships being moved up the Potomac from the James River storage base were largely destroyed by fire. Four more vessels were reported badly damaged, according to a marine cops report from Quantico.
City physician Dr J W Chambliss says he will ask Mayor J E Poole to proclaim next week Clean Up Week with strong effort by all residents. It is expected the mayor will concur. Officer J C Arrington will lead a house to house canvass to promote the initiative.
A startled intruder crept to the West Church street residence of Dr and Mrs J W Chambliss asking for whiskey before fleeing as Sumter County track dogs hunted him. Miss Rachel Scroggs alarmed, police traced prints to a nearby Coker street Negro house but occupant denied being the man. Chambliss could not explain the visit except an attempt to burgle the home and an improvised platform used to peer into a window.
In Abbeville four miles from town a local resident brought a huge purple top rutabaga with 76 small Irish potatoes sprouting from the roots to the county home demonstration agent. The potatoes remained attached as the turnip was harvested, with the largest potato the size of a hen egg and the smallest the size of a pea. The patch sits on a bed once used for Irish potatoes three years ago, now hosting an unusual plant where potatoes sprout from turnip roots.
New Orleans April 18 An Illinois Central fast north bound freight train crashed into a standing freight near Hammond Louisiana. Engineer Hafén burned to death Fireman Tom Rogers fatally injured and an unnamed brakeman hurt. Three cars of alcohol ignited eleven freight cars and a Mogul engine consumed by flames. Rescuers hindered by blue flames that erupted after the crash.
Georgia mining interest surges as plans to reopen old mines expand. The Parks mine in McDuffie County may operate again under eastern capital via F. M. Dancy of Atlanta, with option held by outside interests. Geological surveys note Pre-Cambrian formation hosts high grade gold similar to Homestake and Hollinger mines.
In Rome on April 18 plasterers and painters are converting rooms formerly used by the city clerk and fire department into a new office. A clogged drain caused water damage to walls, but workers are finishing the job and Mr. McCumber is set to occupy one of the finest offices in town in a few days.
In Fitzgerald on April 18 Rev E M Elder testified in the murder case of J C Wilson of Wilcox county charged in the death of banker R E Sappington of Seville. Elder said he found Sappington on the floor with Wilson over him and that Wilson declared I had to get him before he got me. The case moved to Ben Hill Superior Court after Wilcox jury rejected a conditional guilty plea.
Americus resident Maor James A Fort has accepted an invitation to deliver a memorial address at Major Fort 10 BE Memorial. The event honors local history and community figures with a formal program and readings.
