Passenger Steamer Stella Wrecks on Casquet Rocks

A Channel Islands bound passenger steamer Stella struck the Casquet rocks in dense fog off Alderny and sank within minutes. About 185 aboard with 60 reported drowned. lifeboats and collapsible craft carried passengers to safety as news spread by the Lyox and Vera. The captain perished, and survivors recounted boats, rescues, and a chaotic night at sea.

Soldiers Brought Home From Cuba March Troops Discharged

About 13,000 troops returned from Cuba in March as the War Department sped disinfection of baggage to meet treasury rules. Marine Hospital Service and the Quartermaster General coordinated disinfection at Dry Tortugas Black Bear Island Tampa and Savannah ports with medical staff and new equipment. Some 1,000 tons of baggage were disinfected with strict enforcement and no evasion allowed.
