Nixon moves to nominate USC Med Dean as HEW health head

President Nixon announced Dr. Roger O. Egeberg, dean of the University of Southern California Medical School, as assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs. HEW Secretary Finch defended the nomination amid earlier opposition to Dr. Knowles and said he would not resign. Egeberg, former physician to Gen. MacArthur, quipped about a dean’s role and noted AMA disagreements over Knowles.

Hijacker Aloft On Baltimore Miami Flight Forces Havana Stop

A Baltimore to Miami charter diverted to Havana after a passenger threatened crew with a knife. The man, described as intoxicated and ill looking, claimed to be a famous orchestra leader and used a knife to force a stop at Jose Marti Airport. Passengers reported his erratic behavior and threats. no official ID was released. The jet later returned to the United States after about four hours detained by Cuban authorities.

Pampa Man 36 Killed In U.S. 83 Crash

A 36 year old Pampa man, Cecil C. Murphy, was killed when his Halliburton pickup crashed into a tree seven miles north of Perryton on U S Highway 83. Passenger Don DeGeer III, 20, was in satisfactory condition. Murphy, a cementer for Halliburton, had 12 years with the company and formerly lived in Amarillo. Funeral services are planned in Amarillo with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Murphy was born March 20 1933 and served in the Korean War. Survivors include his wife Nancy and daughter Katherine Ann, plus his parents and several siblings.

Sammy Davis Jr. Loses Gun at London Airport Stop

Customs officers in London seized a revolver and ammunition from Sammy Davis Jr. on arrival from Los Angeles. The entertainer, who is in the city for nine weeks to shoot a film, was told he could retrieve the weapons when he next flies to the United States.

Critical Tax Vote Monday tests House on surtax extension

Washington AP reports the House scheduled vote on extending the income surtax to curb inflation. Backers expect a tight but favorable result after Democratic leaders delayed the test and then set a Monday vote amid inflation fears and push for tax reform. President Johnson endorsed extension. Nixon supports it as a tool against inflation and to help the unified budget surplus.

Treasure from 1554 galleon finally turned over to Texas

Land Commissioner Jerry Sadler announced that the last of the treasure recovered from the Padre Island Spanish galleon of 1554 had been turned over to the state. He defended his retrieval plan amid a Kennedy County court case demanding an accounting of artifacts and funds.

Nixon to Lead Round the World Trip Including Apollo Splashdown

President Nixon will depart July 28 for a round the world tour visiting five Asian nations and Communist Romania. He plans to watch the Apollo 11 splashdown off Johnston Island and dine with astronauts before touring Manila Bangkok New Delhi and Lahore among others. Secretary Rogers will accompany him to parts of Asia while Mrs Nixon joins the trip.
