High Plains Digging Draws Texas Oklahoma Archeologists

Archeologists from Texas and nearby states gathered in an Oklahoma Lake Meredith area for the eighth annual Texas Archeological Society Field School. By June 1 a registration of 213 signups marked a well organized dig despite rain delays, with families and media kept at a distance until completion.

UAW Accepts Bell Helicopter Contract Ending Strike

After two weeks on strike, United Auto Workers vote 3 038 in favor and 1 021 against the Bell Helicopter deal. Workers return Monday on a staggered schedule as production resumes at 13 Dallas Fort Worth area facilities. Local 218 previously rejected the same contract in June during a hostile meeting.

100 Degree Heat Hits Amarillo Weekend

The city recorded 100 degree temperatures Saturday after a cool Friday with a high near 80. Thermometers climbed from the low 70s in the morning to the 100 mark by about 5 p.m. Forecasters expect continued heat with a chance of more than 100 degrees today.

Abernathy held on riot incitement charge in Charleston clash

In Charleston, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, head of the SCLC, was ordered held on a 50000 dollar bond after an Inciting riot charge from a Friday night clash between police and about 300 demonstrators. In Chicago, a man refused to pay a 50000 dollar forest fire bill tied to his daughter's rescue in Arizona.

Hope Brothers Deaths Prompt Week of Mourning

Comedian Bob Hope’s brother George, 58, died of cancer Saturday, the second death among the seven Hope brothers in a week. Eldest brother Ivor, 78, died Sunday at his Cleveland home after a heart attack.

Pamela Agnew Weds in Towson Nixon Attends Private Ceremony

Pamela Lea Agnew married her college sweetheart Robert E. DeHsa in Towson Maryland at the Presbyterian Church a private ceremony attended by 350 guests including President Richard Nixon and his wife. Police kept about 800 demonstrators away as the Nixons arrived for the wedding marking Spiro Agnew’s eldest daughter’s nuptials. The event featured Tricia and Julie Eisenhower and David Eisenhower among the guests.

Capitol Hotel to gain three story motel in Amarillo upgrade

Othel Pirtle announces plans to build a three story 100 unit motor hotel next to the Capitol Hotel in downtown Amarillo and to fully renovate the Capitol. Ben Weinberg owner of the hotel says he will visit mid July with his architect to finalize construction. The plan includes a parking lot site east of the Capitol and fronting on South Buchanan at E Fourth Street.

Budget Fight Sparks Texas Special Session Plan

Governor Preston Smith signed a tax delaying veto and set a July 28 special session to craft a new spending bill and taxes. Lawmakers face a 30 day window with two thirds majorities as the new fiscal year starts in September. The veto followed a telecast in which the governor admitted it was hard to veto a measure that included a $15,000 pay raise for him.

Plans for the 16th annual free Fourth of July Fireworks Show at Dick Livins Stadium begin at 9 45 p m with hundreds of aerial and ground displays. The event is sponsored by Globe News Publishing Co with Amarillo Public School musicians performing and a U S Army Reserve color guard conducting flag lowering ceremonies. The Rev Norris Onstead will give the invocation and Wes Izzard will MC. Fireworks expert Norman V Burnett predicts the showcase will be one of the most beautiful ever.
