Tonight and Tuesday continue fair with small temperature changes. Highs near 76 and lows around 50 today, similar to a year ago. Hourly readings list 50 at 6 am, 58 at 9 am, 64 at 10, 68 at 11, 74 at noon, peaking at 76 in the afternoon.
Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrandt, assistant U S attorney general, vows to continue her attack on Gov. Alfred E. Smith over his record on prohibition. Speaking at a Lorain Ohio Methodist conference she says Smith hides behind religion while he is the greatest force against prohibition laws. She argues religion is not the issue, but Smiths record and utterances. She heads to Warren Ohio for another address.
Wilbur C. Hawk, president of the Tri State fair, says $20 000 must be taken in at the grandstand to cover the cost of the Leonard Stroud rodeo and the Schogley and Collins Winter Garden revue. He estimates $35 000 to stage the exposition with $15 000 from concessions, and notes over 60 000 passed the free gate in a weekend. He appeals to Amarillo to attend the 11 performances, promising changing shows nightly and afternoon and evening entertainments.
Myles Fukunga a 19 year old Japanese youth confessed kidnapping and murder of Gill Jamieson and was kept under heavy guard at Oahu prison awaiting indictment. Police reported mob danger subsided though a 20 000 strong crowd gathered at the city jail and a Japanese restaurant was vandalized before calm returned. Prosecutor Davis announced Fukunga’s full confession and urged patience for the legal process.
Dr. Samuel E. Spence, a Stinnett physician, received eighteen months at Leavenworth after pleading guilty to violating the Harrison Narcotic Act. Prosecutors say about 150 prescriptions were written for dope addicts. Also, Ernest L. Ellington of Paris pled guilty to U S forgery and Otto Pietasch, a Plemons cowboy, admitted possession of 45 grains with sentencing deferred. Mrs. Katherine Clark, 36, was found slain near Spokane with a hatchet attack. investigation tied to a man in Boston arranging a marriage.
The case of Ted Hart an 18 year old Smelter employee charged with a statutory offense was postponed to Thursday September 27 due to a missing key witness. Ralph Fessler was severed and will face trial separately as prosecutors proceed with Kinchle assault case.
Clarence Walker was lodged in Potter county jail yesterday on charges of violation of the liquor law. He is alleged to have operated a beer joint and was arrested by sheriff's department deputies. See John about building, Ph. 5285. John Maynard Lbr Co, 800 W South.
Aircraft and pilots including John A. Livingston on Whirlwind, W E B Cary on Travelair, and Lieut commanders Jack Iseman J T Farnham, along with routes from New York to Los Angeles and San Diego to St Louis. Entries show arrival and departure times in September for multiple aircraft and destinations.
Wellington reports Lewis Brown aged 10, son of Mrs Bertha Brown of Quail, was killed instantly Sunday when a water tank shifted and toppled onto a light truck on Hillside road seven miles west of Quail. Companion Lee Minyard, driver, was uninjured. Funeral services were held in Quail.
Deputies uncover sixteen and one half gallons of aged whiskey buried under ground near Box Canyon about ten miles northeast of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Sacks were rotten, suggesting long subterranean storage. no arrests made as deputies waited in hiding after a boy reported the discovery.
Deputy Karl Pittman of Hansford County sheriff’s department visited Amarillo Saturday and Sunday for the Tri State fair. He stayed as guest of Potter County jailer M. N. Nelson and returned to Spearman Sunday night.
Jesse Lee Wilson, released from Potter county jail yesterday, was not indicted by the grand jury which was in session. He had been arrested days earlier and held awaiting grand jury action on a dwindling charge.
Snow fell for a brief period today in the Chautauqua region near Jamestown New York at about 59 degrees. Local emergency services like Griggs ambulance were listed with a contact number 4311.
The Schooley and Collins 1928 Winter Garden Revue opens at 8 pm in front of the Tri-State Fair grandstand produced by A. D. Scott. A chorus of 35 girls and 55 performers headline a lavish outdoor show with costumes costing over $10,000. Dave Derden’s band performs before, and Harold W. English will present night stunt flying with an aerial fireworks display.
Officials anticipate more than 60 000 visitors to Amarillo Day as city schools close at noon and most businesses shut this afternoon. Saturday and Sunday counted 27 426 and 35 556 respectively, with four gates not yet logged. Patronage hinges on carnival rodeo and revue during the remaining six days.
A long list of rodeo acts and riders including Leonard Stroud world champion in 1928 at Cheyenne, Hank Keenan, Gene Kreig, Mayme Stroud, Date Scott, and Ralph Daniels. Pampa led Texhoma 12 to 0 at halftime on the Tri State Park gridiron. Texhoma’s Joe Moore was injured in the second quarter and carried from the fairgrounds to his room in the Amarillo hotel by a Blackburn Box well ambulance. Attending physician had not determined the extent of injuries and Moore was reported unconscious at press time.
All exhibitors who won prizes in the flower department at the fair must call at the department. prizes are ready to be paid out.
A baby boy born at St Anthony's hospital in Amarillo at 6 o'clock this morning to Mr and Mrs Robert Al Gray. The child will be named Robert H Gray Jr with Lt Gray the father a former Royal Flying Corps officer and commercial pilot.
