Senator Charles Curtis gave his sole speech of the day in Sheridan Wyoming while greeting crowds from the rear of his car during a West tour. Governor Alfred E. Smith departed Oklahoma City for Denver with planned stops including Guthrie. Senator Joseph T. Robinson pressed the farm issue as his Kentucky campaign continued.
Amarillo Airport records list Travelair and Wright Whirlwind planes with Billy Parker and Mrs M E Parker from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City arriving September 19. Army observer Lieut Robert L Shoensein arrived from Los Angeles to Selfridge Field with a Wright Whirlwind. Additional flights include Joy Bennett with Mrs W L Curtis and Mrs A K Conant from Los Angeles to Bradford and a Stinson Detroiter from St Louis to Passbra.
Milt Anssinger owner of the Denver Bears praises local fans for funding to keep the team in Amarillo. He notes his cost around 400 dollars to bring the club and says the display shows business men’ s spirit despite poor attendance and travel expenses cutting into profits.
The Central Junior Hi Y was organized this week with sixteen members. Mr. L. Brune, manual training teacher, named sponsor and plans call for an active division in the school. Officers elected were Fred Vaughan president Ben Stone vice president Ralph Neely secretary and treasurer David Jackson sergeant at arms.
Chicago police and Judge Frank Comerford vow a war without mercy on mafia after refusing habeas corpus for Angelo Petitti tied to the kidnapping of Little Billy Ranieri. The boy was released after thirteen days on a kidnapping farm as Petitti was held pending removal of mafia extortionists. Edward Firpe, Italian vice consul, attended with locals demanding action against mafia violence in the Italian quarter.
Potter County Grand Jury indicted Chief of Police H. L. Gaither on four counts of aggravated assault in a case tied to an alleged attack on George Downing, a deputy under Constable J. A. Deadwiley. Warrant unserved at 1 45 this afternoon.
Thousands will witness the coronation of Miss Christine Dyche as Tri-State Breezes queen at the opening of the Tri-State Fair. Derden’s Band plays as the Pageant features disinherited lovers and fairy plots with grand scenery and amplified sound.
Elmo Kenneth Lively five year old son of Mr and Mrs B Lively of 120 McMasters street died at the family home at 235 this morning. Body to be shipped by N S Griggs and Sons to Lakeview for burial this afternoon at six o'clock.
In Franklin Texas on September 21 sheriff W. W. Sandifer faced five escapees as he opened a cell door. His wife rushed to help, grappling with suspect C. H. Brown and aiding her husband to restrain him with a knife until Brown was subdued, believed near death. The other four escapees were recaptured nearby.
Senator Joe H Robinson opened his Kentucky campaign in Owensboro with a call for religious tolerance and praise for Gov. Smith’s Catholic faith. He said he was a Methodist largely due to his mother and predicted the largely churchgoing audience shared similar backgrounds as they listened in a tobacco warehouse.
Honolulu faced its first major crime as Gill Jamie Jamieson a 10 year old boy kidnapped from school was found strangled near the Alawai canal by the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Police military and volunteers hunted the kidnapper amid mob threats and vigilante talk. The Chamber of Commerce reward stood at 10 000 dollars.
Governor Alfred E. Smith blasted the whispering campaign in a fiery Oklahoma City speech to about 40 000 people. He challenged critics over his religion and accused Republicans of financing unsigned literature, then reviewed his record as New York governor.
