Christine Dyche from McKinley school won the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition pageant with 31 850 votes leading runner up Pauline Placey by 2 680 votes. The ballot tally lists ten more duchesses from various area schools and clubs. The winner is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J R Dyche of 836 Crocket.
Leo P. Kelley, a butcher boy, receives a death sentence for murdering Mrs Myrtle Mellus, a society matron. Judge Fletcher Bowron sets November 23 for execution and rejects a new trial motion as counsel plans an appeal.
Officials said the walkout of 2000 miners in three Illinois fields was unauthorized and driven by local dissatisfaction with the Chicago agreement cutting day wages from 7.50 to 6.10. About 600 Bellville district miners refused the new terms while several mines resumed operations in three districts and the southern belt.
More than one hundred Amarillo business men and Kiwanians traveled in a 30 car caravan to Tucumcari this afternoon. The Tucumcari Kiwanis club will host a banquet tonight with the local club providing part of the program and its orchestra and quartet performing. A large group of jobbers and manufacturers joined the trip.

Amarillo men touring the Panhandle have sold the Tri-State fair for months and on Saturday, September 20, will visit the fair for a Traveling Men's Day. Col. Ernest Thompson hosts a banquet at the Herring hotel with over 1,000 invitations issued.
Florence Ivey, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Ivey, died when the auto carrying six girls from a picnic overturned a mile from Childress Texas last night.
City singers gather at Polk Street Methodist church at 7 30 tonight for a joint recital to select participants for the Sunday Tri State fair program. Choirs from city churches and Amarillo College of Music with 100 voices join under Rev C R Hooten and Emil F Myers. A second rehearsal is set for Thursday at the same church.

The cement seat of the Mary Tudor Memorial in Elwood Park was broken Sunday night. City forester Temple Robinson says the 300 pound slab was deliberately damaged, possibly with a hammer or heavy object. Visitors are removing boxes and flowers and cars have been driven into the park. a watchman has been posted and arrests are likely.

The hurricane that swept the West Indies last week crossed Georgia and South Carolina and is moving toward the Atlantic north of Cape Hatteras. Authorities report 626 known dead, with over 1,800 feared dead overall as the storm threatens shipping lanes.
AP reports a hurricane sweeping Florida and the Caribbean with 38 more known dead in the region, raising the toll to about 1,800 in Florida and 1,000 in Porto Rico. Guadeloupe shows heavy fatalities as relief moves forward with Army transports to San Juan and ships bound for the island from New York. In Florida, 24 deaths near Lake Okeechobee and 14 elsewhere, 140 injured in West Palm Beach area, with National Guard ordered to Okeechobee City and West Palm Beach. Relief trains and trucks converge on West Palm Beach and Daytona Beach carrying water, doctors, nurses, and supplies as the storm shifts toward the Georgia Florida line.
