Florida storm toll tops 325 as relief workers count dead

Relief workers said 325 or more people died in the Lake Okeechobee hurricane with Pahokee bearing the heaviest toll at about 200 dead and Belle Glade about 80. Known dead include residents from Chosen and Belle Glade, and many missing remain unaccounted.

Hoover Campaign Appeal Moves Texas Leaders

A delegation of Texas Democrats led by Thomas B. Love urged Herbert Hoover to campaign in Texas. They said Texas is doubtful and could be carried with speeches, despite long-standing Democratic support for Al Smith. The group included Cato Sells, Marshall Hicks, Alvin Moody, O. B. Red Cross Head Reports 200 Hurricane Victims Buried

Howard Selby chairman of Palm Beach county Red Cross told relief workers that as of today the bodies of 200 hurricane victims have been buried in local cemeteries in West Palm Beach Florida.

Stores Close in Amarillo for Tri-State Fair Attendance

Amarillo merchants will close at 1 PM Tuesday to allow employees to attend the free Tri-State Fair. H. Gouldy and R. O. Walkup of the Amarillo Business Men's association say members back the plan, though previously said not required. Labor cooperates as fair opens Saturday with unions sponsoring a holiday on Tuesday.

Court Rules on Extradition of Woman Here

Mrs. Marle Adams former Oregon school teacher arrested on a fugitive warrant was arraigned on habeas corpus to seek extradition for trial on swindling indictments. The court ruled extradition papers valid and that her identity as Marie Adams was proven, with bond set at 10000. She may appeal or return. Oregon sheriff and wife await today’s decision.

Flying veterans laud Panhandle air country during stop at Gray's field

Lieut J G Pratt and Maj Peter Brady, army fliers from Maxwell Field, praised the Panhandle as a prime flying region during a noon stop at Gray's field on their Los Angeles to New York route. They cited year round clear air and easy landings as assets for a future flying center. They will return to Maxwell Field after a flight to New York aboard a Douglas OH2 plane.

City Orders Work or Municipal Airport to Start to Drill Well

The airport commission presented its first detailed recommendations for improving the new municipal airport on the Panhandle highway. The city commission authorized advertising for bids on a 75 gallon per minute water well and a high sheep fence for the 480 acre port. The airport body urged immediate ground preparation with city employees under the engineering department to shape and grade the surface for landing and takeoff.

Team of eight horses trample ranch worker to death

Elmer Harvey Baxter 29, employed at the T. M. Smith ranch near Channing, died after his team of eight horses ran away in a field. Witnesses say Baxter was adjusting harness when the horses frightened and dragged a heavy disc onto him. He died at 8 am from a brain concussion after being moved to St. Anthony's hospital. He had recently moved from Fort Worth where he worked in life insurance. A brother arrived in Amarillo. parents live in Temple, Texas. survived by three more siblings. The body lay in state at Blackburn-Boxwell parlors.

Army Planes At Local Port On Return Flight

A squadron of ten Curtis Hawk army pursuit planes from Selfridge field Michigan stopped in Amarillo at noon during a return flight from an air meet in Los Angeles. They paused 11 15 a.m. to 1 15 p.m. at Amarillo Airport Corp. field for fuel. The Fokker monoplane carrying the supply officer and crew accompanied the group. Ambulance Griggs listed at Phone 4011 for crew records.

Thirteen day search for kidnapped Billy Ranieri ends after the boy, found at a Joliet filling station, says he wants to go home. He reports being struck in the eye, imprisoned on a farm, and repeatedly told to stay silent as ransom talks fell through.
