Barcelona War Tales from the Beautiful Sad City
American novelist Theodore Dreiser reports from Barcelona during the civil war, describing a city wrecked by bombing yet still proud and resilient. He notes vast refugee flows, ruined power and transport, scarce food, and a populace enduring with quiet dignity while warplanes patrol the harbor. He contrasts Barcelona’s stoic civility with Western cities, marveling at its architecture and the hopeful spirit of its people amid hardship.
