College Maid Shop Empowers Girls To Earn While Learning
In Maryville Tennessee the college maid shop began when cotton crop failures forced ten Maryville College girls to return home. Head of home economics Mrs. Kathryn McMurray started a tiny factory with ten sewing machines and a New York store partnership. The program grew as 103 more girls joined, producing uniforms sold to female workers in industrial plants and supporting the students’ education. Girls are paid by the piece from 15 to 45 cents an hour, and the students learn to complete garments rather than follow factory routines. The shop also cuts patterns for Maryville materiel sent to the College of the Ozarks Parson College and Berea College, with pieces returned for final marketing.
