In Austin on September 12, Texas agriculture commissioner George B. Terrell denounced federal drouth relief plans as a myth, saying no meat or bread has been offered and funds have not been provided by either government. He argued aid is political theater aimed at currying support in a crucial election year. Separately, three burglars were driven off by a shotgun blast from Pat Murphy at the Acme Laundry corner. other break-ins at Panhandle Paint and Walter Irvin dealership failed.
The League of Nations council ordered withdrawal of 300 allied soldiers protecting railroad lines in the Sarre Basin on the Franco German frontier. German foreign minister Curtius pressed for removal to influence Reichstag voters. The assembly also heard Briand and Henderson debate disarmament and European federation within the League framework.
G O Bateman of Dallas, vice president of the Texas & Pacific, told Amarillo traffic committee the planned 338 mile line will be a main line built to main line standards and will reach Amarillo. He denied any plan for a stub route or a northern extension through the Panhandle.
The Navy General Board will convene to decide future building policy under the London Naval Treaty. It must assess current ships and planned construction, balancing replacing obsolescent vessels with new ships to reach treaty strength, all amid President Hoover’s drive for government economy. The cost to reach limits is estimated at about 1 billion dollars.
Columbus Ohio September 12 The Ohio State Republican platform presented to the convention called for enforcement of all laws but carried no mention of prohibition.
Dallas pharmacy chief says only registered pharmacists may sell drugs under a new law. In Amarillo soda fountains can operate but cannot dispense medicines unless in original packages, enforced by two inspectors. Violations carry fines or jail.
Amarillo police received telegram signed by Jeff DePriest stating C. M. Warshan is dead. Warshan with wife and two children left Santa Fe Friday in a black Chevrolet coach with Oklahoma plates. message instructed officers to tell him Luther has passed away. Mrs. Ben Boyd of Davis visits relatives here this week.
Senator Wheeler, long seen as a prohibitionist, advocates ending the Eighteenth Amendment and letting states control liquor. He voices agreement with Governor Roosevelt’s view that prohibition should be decided by states, marking a shift in party stance.
A 21 year old girl is in critical condition after five hours of torture by a Beaumont man who took her to a hotel room and burned her in more than 100 places with cigarettes or cigars. She described the assault to officers and remained delirious at times. Police search for the 24 year old suspect. Burns cover lips face chest back and limbs with some wounds showing a red hot tool.
The body of H. H. Myhra, seaman from the west coast shipping out of New Orleans, was found beaten and shot beside a road into Houston. C. D. Kennedy, also a seaman, was held as a witness after reporting they were attacked by two white men and a negro who abducted Myhra. Kennedy identified the car used as Louisiana license 218,908 and described bloodstains near the vehicle.
Justice B A Hefner of Oklahoma Supreme Court is disqualified from the oil proration case. Guy Green of Waurika, a House member, appointed by Governor Holloway to replace him. The change may delay the court’s ruling on the C C Julian Oil and Royalties Co. matter. Hefner resides in Ardmore.
A revived tropical hurricane previously damaging Santo Domingo moves toward the North Carolina coast. The U S Weather Bureau issued a warning noting the disturbance, though smaller in diameter, remains hurricane strength with its center expected to reach the coast this afternoon south of Hearfort.
Capt Dieudonne Costes and Maurice Bellonte plan a 26 day goodwill flight starting Monday September 15 covering 31 cities. The Itinerary includes New York Boston Cleveland Indianapolis Detroit Chicago Milwaukee St Paul Minneapolis Omaha Denver Salt Lake City Seattle Portland San Francisco Los Angeles Phoenix El Paso San Antonio Oklahoma City Kansas City St Louis Memphis New Orleans Pensacola Atlanta Winston Salem Richmond Baltimore Philadelphia Wilmington and more.
City hall officials said the Canyon Pike will open to traffic by the opening day of the Tri-State fair on September 22, creating a continuous hard surfaced highway from Canyon to Amarillo. Contractors Willmering and Mullen expect pavement to Hayden Street by September 22 and to Onge Street along Randall County paving.
Chicago September 12 The National Air Transport one of the nation’s largest airlines has bought the Stout Air Service the oldest air passenger line. N A T will run air mall and express between New York Chicago and Dallas while the Brout Company operates between Chicago Detroit and Cleveland. Seymour vice president says near future will create a seven and a half hour service between Chicago and New York. Existing routes will continue and be expanded.
Henry Gooch numberless friends in this city anxiously await word from the clinic after he underwent a major exploratory operation at North West Texas Hospital. Brother Horace Gooch of Colorado Springs was expected to arrive Friday night. Other relatives in Kentucky were notified of his serious condition.
In Chicago on September 12 a dying gang member disclosed details leading to the arrest of Nicholas Muscato, reputed racket leader, now jailed on a two murder count. The confession ties Muscato to the killings of two of his followers.
Four unidentified itinerants were killed when 15 cars of a Rock Island freight train loaded with casing head gasoline derailed at Kremlin near Enid Oklahoma. The fire spread the length of the train as all cars left the track.
