Fliers to Stay in Washington Through Defense Day

Major General Patrick announced the world fliers will remain in Washington until after Defense Day on September 12. Secretary Weeks said the fliers will join Defense Day exercises, then depart Saturday around 8 or 9 o clock for the next leg of their journey after a meeting with President Coolidge. Coolidge congratulated the pilots at the White House.

Amarillo singer Mary McCormie arrives in Amarillo after touring Europe and Northern Africa with concert triumphs. The Chicago Opera and Paris Grand Opera member says she will rest in Amarillo for a few weeks before departing to begin her Chicago company engagement and performs here September 19. She praises The Globe and notes Texas nominates a woman for governor.

Real Silk Hosiery opens Amarillo office with Dawes as branch manager

The Real Silk Hosiery Mills of Indianapolis opened an office at 104 East Sixth Street in Amarillo with A. G. Mickey Dawes named branch manager. Dawes said Amarillo is a live city and a planned distributing point for the territory, offering the latest hosiery styles and new Paris colors through the Real Silk Service.

BIS RED RIVER BRIDGE BURNS

Fire damaged the Red River toll bridge at Burkburnett Texas and across the border in Oklahoma. Estimated loss about 25000 dollars. Fire started around 3 am at five points on the Oklahoma side. Bark Burnett firemen saved half the Texas portion by splitting the bridge. Oklahoma side washed away previously and rebuilt after last November flood.

Warrant for arrest of Firpo sought in Newark

Herbert Gilson of Jersey City with Cannon Williams and attorney Bernard Sandler filed in Newark for a bench warrant to arrest Luis Angel Firpo on Mann Act charges. Judge Runyon reserved decision until tomorrow.

Slaying of Robert Franks Spurs Chicago Police Work

Aged 14 Robert Franks was kidnapped on May 21 1924 en route from Harvard preparatory school to his home in Chicago. The following day a ransom note arrived and the nude body was found near a culvert. Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. confessed to the crime ending one of Chicago’s largest manhunts.

City expands polling places for upcoming election

In a regular session the city commission approved eight polling places replacing two. Precincts and voting sites will mirror the county setup with ordinances to be drafted soon. The Lions club led the movement for more polling sites. The Coffee Shop at the Amarillo Hotel is famous for food.

Slayers Await Trip to Prison at Joliet After Life Sentence

Nathan Leopold Jr and Richard Loeb received life imprisonment for the murder of 14 year old Robert Franks and ninety years for kidnapping. The judge cited youth and humane progress in criminal law as reasons to spare the death penalty. A large crowd gathered outside the Cook County jail as officials prepared Joliet penitentiary commitments and the men awaited transfer.

Amarillo to Get First M System Self Service Store

Arrangements are made for the first of four M System self service grocery stores in Amarillo with a hoped opening October 1 or 15. W N George named manager will operate at 506 Polk Street in the former Home Beautiful building. A San Jacinto site is planned before January 1 with two more to follow in nearby counties. The system began in Clovis two years ago and now has about thirty stores including Dallas. Do Farr finances the Amarillo project and George will run a connected market. George has twelve years in the business and three with Piggly Wiggly in Fort Worth.

Jewels Stolen From Cosden Home In Sands Point Heist

Jewelry valued at 250000 dollars was stolen from the home of J B Cosden a wealthy oil man and race horse owner at Sands Point Long Island. Some gems belonged to Lord and Lady Mountbatten who were guests at the Cosden residence. A sneak thief entered the room of Mrs Cosden Lady Mountbatten and Mrs Norton while they were away Monday night.
