The Potter County Grand Jury returned 20 indictments and stayed in session to hear a slaying case and other matters. True bills include three assault with intent to murder, three drunken driving, one child support and desertion, one narcotics possession, two burglary, six forgery, two car theft, one swindling. Indicted individuals include B Leithauser, Donald Ray Johnson, Elvis Ratliff, Buck Harrell, J H Simmons, L C Andrews, D S Perry, Luis Lopez. some arrests pending. The slaying case is Eftin Cryseroff charged with killing J W Adams at 42114 East Fourth Street yesterday. Several cases will be tried next week after a jury panel is ordered to report.
The Potter County jail is undergoing a bed bug clean up as inmates are moved to accommodate mopping crews. Jailer Dick Vaughn says all insects must go and bedding is being cleaned amid a near full jail of about 59 county boarders.
The body of O. D. Flanders aged retired railroad conductor will be sent to Newton Kansas for burial after funeral services at Griggs Funeral Chapel at 4 this afternoon. The pioneer died at the home of a son here Tuesday. The note also mentions the founding of the world petroleum industry by Col Edward Laurence Drake who struck oil at Titusville Pennsylvania on August 27 1859.
High Salvation Army officials and Panhandle corps cadets gathered in Amarillo to discuss officer training programs. Maj G Lambrecht opened at Turner's Citadel with state leaders present. Cadets from Lubbock Pampa Amarillo Plainview Littlefield showcased progress. certificates were awarded for three and six year courses. A public session at 7:45 featured dramatic sketches.
Prowlers entered the Dr. George Waddill Jr. home at 705 Tennessee Street by a broken window screen and stole three purses during a bridge game. Evelyn Waddill Price lost 7 dollars, Mrs. Bob Kesterson reported 10 dollars and a 20 dollar check, and Miss G Morris’s purse fate undetermined.
Poet and editor Robert Penn Warren will address Amarillo audiences at 8 15 PM in the Episcopal Parish House presented by the Potter County Library. Admission 80 cents adults 25 cents students with Warren noted for Southern Review biographies and works in major magazines.
The article traces Mr. Ware of Amarillo who ran a local bank and cattle operation then moved to Fort Worth in 1899 to oversee ranching. He returned to Amarillo and in 1900 purchased the Amarillo National Bank from A H Wood, keeping it until 1906 when A G Boyce bought it.
Army troops undertake a multi day pace through Panhandle towns with Capt. Peter P. Gertz and Lt. Richard Jewett leading. The unit stops in Dalhart then San Angelo and Fredericksburg before joining other forces at Camp Bullis. The march spans miles daily at 20 to 25 mph covering about 200 miles with full rifles. Amarillo residents will view the procession.
Doctors said moving the patient from the respirator would be fatal. Marthalee Benson and Mrs. Dorothy Cossick showed partial chest muscle paralysis but could breathe with effort. A $2,500 respirator from New York was ordered to be installed at General Hospital for shared use by the woman and child.
A Sunday observance marks the eleventh anniversary of the North Heights Addition a colored section of the city. The program at 3 p m Sunday is at the Greater Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church sponsored by the North Heights Civic Club with Nelson Nobles as chairman.
Potter County teachers plan a 10:00 a m meeting in the county superintendent’s office at the courthouse to discuss the new school year and elect officers. Mrs W D Ward is president. Rural schools have been improved since the last session. Long S School has a new building ready Sept 12. Bushland Brady Allison and Highland Park have renovated facilities. Public schools open Monday.
Boris Karloff stars in Night Key shown at the Texas on Saturday at midnight. He plays an inventor whose gadget and he end up in the hands of crooks.
Elmer Rorex of Oklahoma City disrupts two suspects stealing his car near West Sixth Avenue Amarillo. He and passersby detain one, while the other escapes, later reappearing with a second car stolen from John Malin of San Jacinto. Police arrest the two youths. Malin’s damaged car remains in a Houston insured garage.
Air Race records show pilots including Milo Burchan of Long Beach and Lieut Joseph Mackey of Findlay piloting the Wedell Williams special. They depart LA and pass Albuquerque Oklahoma City and Kansas City with varied stops and fueling during a multi hour, high speed leg run.
