Devers Warns US Guard Shortage For Defense
Gen Jacob L Devers Army ground forces chief warned at the Nebraska State Fair that the United States would rely on the National Guard and Organized Reserve for defense. He cited 682000 authorized Guard officers and men but only 100000 recruited, and a large Reserve enrollment with few assigned to Organized Reserve Corps. He noted only the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg and the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis plus one regimental combat team at Camp Hood would be available for homeland action as most regular troops were overseas.
