United States and Britain unveiled a new four power plan to raise industrial ceilings in their zones to about 10.7 million ingot tons of steel annually and boost exports by 15 percent from 1936 levels to aid postwar recovery.
General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower told American Legionnaires there is no imminent global war, but the U.S. armed forces must be strong enough to deter aggression. He advocated universal military training and a unified defense structure to meet changing warfare and protect free government.
Mrs Pauline Kibbe longtime executive secretary of the Texas Good Neighbor Commission since 1943 announced her resignation today. The nationally known official’s departure marks a major change in the agency’s leadership.
Mrs. Kibbe resigns from the Good Neighbor Commission citing policy conflicts with the governor and a gag rule since June 25. She insists the commission’s true purpose is to solve Mexico descent community issues for about 1.2 million residents and notes the old commission ends September 4 with a new appointment pending.
Harold E. Hirshberg, 29, chief Navy signalman, was sentenced to 10 months at the US Naval Restraining Command in Norfolk and dishonorable discharge after a Navy court martial in Brooklyn. He was convicted of striking two fellow prisoners of war but acquitted on charges he reported escape plans leading to torture and a death. The record goes to Washington for final review as Hirshberg stays confined pending a Brooklyn habeas corpus decision.
The Globe apologizes for late deliveries over the last ten days due to a newsprint shortage. The paper explains off site stock requires cutting and special folding, slowing a 19 000 copy press run. They expect relief soon and promise front porch delivery before supper time again.

A Civil Aeronautics Board examiner recommended West Central Airlines of Fort Worth be granted a route from Amarillo to Bismark North Dakota with stops in Great Bend Kansas and other cities across Kansas Texas Oklahoma Nebraska South Dakota and North Dakota. The decision rests with the CAB and rivals Texas New Mexico Airlines Eagle Airlines Mahon Flying Service and Kansas City Airways have filed denials and alternative routes. Bernard Gault Faulkner was convicted of murder for the June 1 fatal stabbing of his wife Edith Norrid Honeycutt in a hotel. Records show heavier sentences in Potter County including 99 year terms for Amaro captain murder suspect Frank Crutchfield and for rape cases E. E. Reynolds and Thomas Lee Compton.
