Tragedy at Buffalo Lake Claims Three Young Lives

A boat accident on Buffalo Lake near Amarillo last night killed Lola Lorene Bevers 24 Janie Arlene Bevers 22 and Francis Earl Steele 20. Two male companions B L Moore 34 and Don ald Van Ausdall 20 were rescued but shaken. The sunken welded steel boat with air tanks likely leaked its stern tank causing the overturn and deaths. Police and fire crews recovered the bodies by dawn and funeral arrangements are pending.

Pay Hike for Rail Workers

An arbitration board awarded a wage increase of 15 1 2 cents an hour to nearly one million non-operating railroad workers, effective yesterday. The six member board chaired by Dr. William Leiserson based its finding on hearings in Chicago Aug 4 to Aug 28. In Amarillo an estimated 1,200 to 1,500 non-operating employees will gain, including clerks telegraphers signal men and shop crafts workers. The raise is the third awarded in just over a year for this class of workers.

School Board Sets Tax Rate at $1.46

Amarillo school tax rate set at 1.46 per 100 dollars of valuation, down from 2.52. The change affects property taxes for local residents and funds district operations.

County Boosts Tax Rate

The Potter County commission set an 80 cent tax rate, up 20 cents, to fund the largest county budget. Public schools receive 1.30 per dollar of valuation with 31 cents debt service. the college 16 cents, with 3 cents debt service. Protesters urged lower rates, while officials cited higher salaries, costs, jail population and Northwest Texas Hospital expansion as reasons for the increase.

Man Dies Beneath Engine At Transfer Spur

Elmer Stanley Smith about 35 was killed when struck by a Santa Fe switch engine at the Armstrong Transfer Company spur First and Pierce. Thomas Leatherman 11 saw him asleep between tracks minutes before the accident. Washington White House reopened after redecorating attracting nearly 1500 tourists in the first hour.

Gandhi Begins Fast Bidding for Peace in Calcutta

Calcutta reports show communal rioting leaving about 50 dead and 371 wounded. Mahatma Gandhi, in a bid for peace, calls on followers to renounce lynch law and ends his fast only when sanity returns to Calcutta.

37 Dead In Train Collision At Dugald Station

In Dugald Manitoba thirty seven bodies were recovered from the wreckage of two Canadian National passenger trains after a head on collision at Dugald station last night. At least twenty five were injured as a fire broke out in a car and spread to a nearby oil warehouse and grain elevator. The collision involved a transcontinental express from Winnipeg to Toronto and a holiday train bound for Winnipeg en route from Winnipeg.

Ex-GI Bond Cashing Sparks Amarillo Retail Rush

Ex soldiers lined up at Amarillo banks as GI bond cashing began nationwide. Banks counted bonds from $600 to $1,000 as thousands scheduled for cashing, with about $200,000 expected by 2 p.m. Merchants reported brisk trade in jewelry and apparel while many veterans planned to invest or pay debts. Bond holders urged to cash only in urgent need amid inflation fears.

September Heat Near All-Time Record Shatters Texas Readings

Weather observers reported a searing September heat wave as Texas records broke near the all-time mark. By noon the thermometer reached 97, climbing to 98 later, with forecasts calling for temperatures 3 to 5 degrees above average and little rainfall statewide. Eighteen Texas stations reported 100 degrees or more, including Henrietta at 112 and Vernon at 110. Fort Worth saw a low of 80 as heat persisted across West Texas.

Deputy Lem Pounds Beaten Near Sixth and Tyler

Deputy Sheriff Lem Pounds was assaulted early this morning by two unidentified men using brass knuckles near Sixth and Tyler. He suffered deep facial wounds and was rendered unconscious before driving to Northwest Texas Hospital. Pounds plans to testify in a marijuana case at the 47th District Court.
