Blind Woman Struck By Car On Seventh Avenue Polk Street

Mrs. Joe Meacham, a 55 year old blind resident at 1408 Lincoln, was hit by a car driven by Mrs. Dan Loving as she crossed Seventh Avenue at Polk Street. She and her Seeing-Eye dog Tex were rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital. Meacham suffered a possible broken leg. extent of injuries not yet determined. Tex served in the Army K-9 Corps and has been her guide dog for five years.

Halloween Pranks Versus Vandalism In Amarillo Chronicle

Potter County to Names New Assistant County Attorney

Jerry Kolander will assume duties as assistant county attorney about two weeks from now succeeding O M Calhoun who resigns effective Nov 1 to join McCarthy Snodgrass Haynes. Calhoun served three years since Nov 1948 and Calhoun’s family resides at 1901 Avondale. Kolander, a University of Minnesota Law School graduate who came to Amarillo in 1948, previously worked in Globe News Sports and city news and recently passed the Texas bar. He is married with two children and leads Trinity Lutheran Church as president.

New Tax Boosts Whiskey Sales in Amarillo

Whiskey sales surged as customers rushed to liquor stores to beat an impending tax hike effective tomorrow. A major package store reported volumes about double normal levels while prices for whiskey rise 40 to 50 cents per fifth and 12 to 15 cents on half pints. Wine and beer show little price impact with wine up 7 cents on sweet varieties and 2 cents on dry, likely absorbed by makers. beer may rise about 15 cents per case.

Hallowe en Festivities Moved to Bull Barn in Amarillo

Cold weather forced the Halloween celebration to relocate indoors at the Tri-State Fair Park Bull Barn. The window painting contest became a large wall painting event from 6 to 8 pm, with the parade and carnival starting at 7:30 pm. Free bus rides and a radio show remain unchanged. Funeral services were held in Versailles for ex Queen Amelie of Portugal age 86 who died last Thursday after 41 years in exile. Many European royals attended the ceremony in France.

Twelve Trapped After West Virginia Mine Blast Near Rayford

An explosion in the Truax-Tract United No 1 mine near Rayford West Virginia trapped 12 workers deep in the tunnel. Rescue efforts were hampered by foul air and debris as authorities confirmed three bodies recovered and feared the rest may be lost. Officials said 16 men were in the mine when the blast occurred around 2 AM and that a father and son were among the missing.

Slow soaking rains last night boosted crop conditions across the South Plains with totals from a third to 2% inches. Amaranillo .17 inches at the airport and .28 in town, lows near 34. Dick Seay president of Mcorrow- Thomas Hardware Company suffered a paralytic stroke at his home on Van Buren. He collapsed while dressing about 6:30 am and was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital paralyzed on the left side. By late morning he was regaining movement and his condition was improving, per firm information from his physician.
