Disease Lags In Death Race
Disease is no longer the leading cause of death among children as accidents top the list. Babies Hospital at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center will launch a yearlong pilot study this fall to pursue a new approach to preventing child injuries. Metropolitan Life Insurance funds the project with Dr. Austin McIntosh stating that advances in sulfa drugs antibiotics and modern techniques cut infectious deaths.

Child accidents high share of fatalities in youth
McIntosh notes accidents cause more child deaths than any single disease. In ages 1 to 4 home incidents account for about two fifths of fatal accidents, with 26.5 percent of boys 1 to 4 and 24.4 percent of girls in accidents. As ages rise, accident rates climb and cancer becomes a leading second cause.
