Britain recalls envoy to Tehran over oil row

Southwestern moves offices to Public Service Building

Southwestern Public Service Co moved its paying office and utilization department from Fifth and Polk to the Public Service Building at Third and Polk. The eight story building, bought in 1947, now houses these final departments with the paying office on the west ground floor and the demonstration kitchen and all electric laundry in the east. Utilization staff will host dinners for Heath Appliance personnel, showcasing Crosley appliances, as part of customer and firm demonstrations.

The Atomic Energy Commission detonated the seventh nuclear blast at Frenchman’s Flat, via a B 29 drop. The medium size test mushroomed to a 10,000 foot rise, 50 mile width, displayed a color-changing cloud, and was visible from Las Vegas with limited shock impact near the range. Observers noted no troop participation and anticipated further tests the next day.

Chaplain Dies Rescuing Drowning Men at Beach

Maj. Ray Stephens Air Force chaplain and former McLean and Spearman pastor died amid a rescue attempt at the beach in Spearman. He helped form a human chain to reach two men caught in a dangerous undertow. the chain broke and he drowned. The two men were saved. Stephens, 40, stationed at Patrick AFB Cocoa Florida, earned the Bronze Star in the Pacific. He had served as pastor at McLean and Spearman after the war, and was active in Lions Club and local religious programs. Survivors include his wife Alla Mae Gammill and three children. Funeral plans not yet announced.

Couple Dies as Car Rams Truck in Borger Texas

A Borger couple, Carlton Bivens 42 and Annabelle 26, died when their speeding car struck a stalled cattle truck on Highway 117 twelve miles northeast of Stinnett. Truck driver Jerry Hollaway of Amarillo escaped unharmed. Bivens son Charles Scott, and siblings survive. Funeral plans pending at Minton Funeral Home. A second fatal crash near Hedley killed Mrs. Jimmie Ward Loudermilk 35, with injuries to two daughters and Miss Zanza Bennett as they rode home from Fort Worth.

UMT To Get Going In Summer

Washington reports universal military training planners expect a six month UMT program for 18 year olds on a limited scale next summer. Dr Karl Compton said about 60 000 young men can be spared from the draft for training if Congress approves. B 29 Crash At McClellan Involves 12 Onboard Injured

A B 29 at McClellan Air Force Base spun, ground looped, broke in two and caught fire last night. Eleven airmen were injured while a civilian fireman died of a heart attack. Two crewmen were seriously hurt, nine others minor. The aircraft was returning for an emergency landing after an aborted takeoff for Honolulu.

Two Die In Plane Crash Near Isabell Kansas
