Fourteen barrels of alcohol valued at pre war prices and four barrels of silverware were stolen from a box car in Pennsylvania freight yards. The loot belonged to Jesse Lasky of Famous Players Lasky Corp and included paintings and other goods. Mrs Lasky lamented the loss of prewar wines and champagnes.
Washington October 20 Colonel William Mitchell failed today in two attempts to halt the court martial proceedings against him. The court overruled objections to its jurisdiction and to the form of the trial. The proceeding raised questions about authority and the role of the president in charges against Mitchell.
Paris reports that order is restored in Damascus according to General Sarrail French high commissioner. He denies evacuation of women and children and notes only brigands outside the city caused trouble with returning residents. Puainleve's cabinet faces a growing Syria crisis as Sarrail seeks 15000 reinforcements.
Ben Golding county tax collector was operated on yesterday afternoon for appendicitis. Doctors report a fairly good night, with favorable condition this afternoon. The appendix had burst and gangrene had set in.
