Navy cuts discharge scores to speed demobilization
Washington reports about 13 000 additional Navy aviators will be eligible for discharge November 1 as reserve flying officer score thresholds drop from 44 to 39 for above ensign ranks and from 36 to 20 for ensigns. Further cuts are planned to 34 and 30 in December and January. Approximately 15 000 reserve aviators want to stay on active duty, with about 11 000 moving to the regular Navy. Navy nurses also see thresholds fall from 35 to 32 on November 1, enabling about 2 700 more to be demobilized by January 1. Through October 20, 341 000 personnel have been discharged since V J Day, with bottlenecks in water transportation delaying remaining demobilizations.
