President Truman told Congress that the United States must stay militarily strong and urged a year’s military training for young men aged 7 to 20, proposing a small professional army to bolster national defense.

A midtown Amarillo group moved from lighter sheet iron to a permanent coliseum plan after last night’s revolt against temporary structures. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal sparked interest with a proposed five year billion dollar program starting with a 1.75 million dollar coliseum. A joint six-member planning board from the city, county, and school district would coordinate exhibit and recreation facilities, including a new high school football stadium, to prevent overlapping spending.
The CIO United Automobile Workers press a wage dispute with General Motors as a strike vote looms among GM's 300000 workers. Walter Reuther claims GM gave notice of a sit down strike while GM foresees a vote approving a strike. Other automakers Ford Chrysler and U S Steel reply to wage demands amid potential nationwide labor action.
